Received it today and being mostly unfamiliar with the score (I saw the movie long ago but that's about it), am impressed with the at times ethereal quality of the drawn out synthy/choir cues (in that sense a good companion for Nemesis). This is a style I'm not used to from Silvestri or at least not to this degree without exploding into action big grin. Speaking of which, I also like the militaristic padding -which is a typical Cameron requirement it would seem- and the 'Predator' related action material which rocks, as well as even some Judge Dredd precursors. For a sci-fi/action score of '89 it has aged well and definitely a highlight of this batch!

I'm so glad to finally have this score in complete (almost) form. It's been one of my favorite scores since first seeing the film in 1989. Hearing the alternate cues are a revelation to the evolution of the composing process. The only thing I wish had been included was the choral backing heard in the film version of Bud On The Ledge. That aside it's a fabulous release from Varese.

Had the day off due to the snow storm and the university being closed, so my father and I were in "THE ABYSS". We started the day playing his original Varese Sarabande release, then we played my deluxe edition and then we watched the movie. After watching the movie, we went back to the original and deluxe edition CDs to see if we could find our favorite parts. All of our favorites cues are covered on the original release. Glad to have my own copy of THE ABYSS, but I will be making a shorter version, it is just to long. Sometimes I have to agree with Thor.

Too long, but there are some excellent parts to add to the original release, at least.

Finally got hold of my copy of THE ABYSS. The sound quality is just incredibly fantastic. The sonics were well captured by Dennis Sands at the rercording sessions. The superb remastering and the wealth of unpublished music has given the score an entirely new focus and depth. What an amazing assembly by Mike Mattessino. The whole score is a different listening experience the way the composer initialy intended. Some great new nuggets and action tracks as well as alternates are in there. The OST is a cute representation of highlights in comparasion. But not just for the sake completists out there this is a major restoration that fans of the film and film music will find very rewarding.

Enjoying this score! I put together my own 54-min edit using the deluxe edition, taking out most of the synth/atmospheric parts and creating an almost entirely orchestral powerhouse of a score big grin
I have an all-new appreciation for this Silvestri classic

well i've ended up doing the opposite, i'm used to Silvestri's action sound, but i'm not aware of another score where he employs eerie sonics and textures like he does here, and as someone who's got a soft spot for listless dreamy music to begin with, i think he's very good at it. what I've got atm...

let me drown your rat / search the montana
jammer freaks
lindsey's close encounter
the pseudopod
the only way
bud's big dive
defusing the bomb
bud on the ledge
the only way (alternate)

all in all I'm blown away by this cd, i've had the vinyl since day one and was never that fond of it, but having all of this extra music, and sounding so superb, has made a huge difference, favorite track though - has got to be the alternate version of the only way - a collection of strong melodies that somehow brings to mind the whole experience of getting all the way drawn into a film.

A few questions for Neil or Mr Matessino:

- the alternate of "Flooding and Sinking": is it an alternate, or is it a synth demo for the cue (it would be a demo for an alternate, of course)?

- same for the alternate segment of "The Pseudopod": this time, it seems virtually the same as the one on CD1, but sounds more synth-like: is it an alternate or a demo?

- "What a Drag (Wild Original)" seems to be the intended tempo of the original version - I lined it up with the film and it synched perfectly; is this correct?

- the "Vocal Insert": is it for the opening of the end credits (cf the beginning of the insert) or for the tracked "Bud on the Ledge" part of the end credits (not on the Varèse) (cf the ending of the insert)? My guess is the latter: just like in that end credits part, it's only choir, while the corresponding part in "Bud on the Ledge" has that overlay.

There is an upcoming interview with Neil S Bulk on The Abyss coming over the weekend. Keep your eyes on the board for that update.

Thanks, I will, but I doubt it will answer all of my questions here. Anyone?

Folks ! our very own La La Land veteran producer and editor Neil S Bulk talks at length about his contributions to the making of The Abyss and The Blue Max sound track reissues. It was an honor and a first opportunity to interview Neil S Bulk. (Thanks again) and also to Christopher Coleman for hosting the interview on his website. Enjoy.

Mike Matessino refers to the "digital scoring masters" with their three-channel mix as the source for this remaster. Neil Bulk in his Tracksounds interview mentions the stuffed hard drive on which this material was conveyed. I assume this hard drive contained all the slates and partial takes.

Do any album production personnel know whether the multitracks on the Twentieth-Century Fox scoring stage were recorded digital or analog? Digital was becoming less fuzzy by '89, yet this stuff sounds as clean as analogue to me. Or is the noise-reduction becoming that good on archive digital audio? If noise reduction was applied to digital, did the audio crew at Fox apply it or did the Varese team apply it to the three channel-to-stereo mix?

Thanks for the warning. I've had my eye on this for too long without getting round to ordering it. Rectified that mistake today - nick of time

Crap, looks like I'm late.
Question about Disc 2 track 9 (Finale & End Credits). Is the track as it appears in the film or is it truncated?
