MovieScore Media & Kronos Records present

Anne & Alet (Mark R. Candasamy)

http://moviescoremedia.com/anne-alet-mark-r-candasamy/

In 2013, MovieScore Media released a score from a Nordic documentary feature, Tale of a Forest by Finnish composer Panu Aaltio, which subsequently won the ‘Best Documentary Score’ International Film Music Critics Award.

Our contribution to the race for the title this year comes from another Nordic composer, Mark R. Candasamy from Norway. His orchestral music for Anne & Alet, a theatrical documentary feature about the infamous poisonings carried out by two sisters in Øyestad in the 18th century, is an exercise in emotionally charged but extremely elegant and romantic orchestral writing where the composer’s knack for interesting harmony goes beyond what you’d expect from a period piece. The orchestrations are exquisite (the strings are very richly textured) and the themes highly engaging, and the dramatic highlights are scored with great maturity.

As a bonus, the album features a concert setting based on the film score.

I recommend people to check out this score by my good friend Mark. While the film didn't have wide distribution here in Norway, the music is certainly wonderful. Lush and sophisticated writing for strings, in particular.

I was present at a 45 minute film music concert with Candasamy on solo piano this saturday. He played some of the music from Anne & Alet, plus selections by composers like Kjetil Bjerkestrand and Marius Christiansen, and several more unknown pieces. Quite many people present.

Yeah, I wanted to attend that, but I'm not going to the South of Norway untill Wednesday (presently in Denmark). Sounds like a blast!

Playing this CD now. Picked up (with some others) in the Kronos CD offer.
Really polished and professional scoring.
The string work is most excellent (dude). Recalls the sound/style of classic Pino Donaggio at times.
The title track (3) is a lovely combination of tender/poignant/sweet.
Highly recommended.

Thor, any other scores available on CD by this composer?

It's a great score, probably his best so far. Alas, he's "stuck" working with too small a film industry down in Kristiansand, so he doesn't get the amount of gigs he deserves (IMO).

Not much else has been released so far (to my knowledge), but I can also recommend DEN HENGTE MANNEN (THE HUNG MAN??), which is more gritty and Herrmann-ish. This has a soundtrack that should be available on iTunes, Spotify etc.

Thanks Thor.
The subject matter also sounds fascinating to me.
So, with the passage of time and the circumstances of the execution, did the opinion about those two murdering girls change from vengeance to sympathy?
Were YOU aware of this Nordic story during your schooling years?
This score also has a Herrmann-esque sound at times. Certainly the Knackerman track bears a strong BH influence.
The Finale/Execution track is compelling!

Even though I grew up in the South (just some 40-50 km away from Kristiansand, and not that far away from the where this happened), I curiously hadn't heard about this event before.

A little on the fences about the samples, is this all MIDI or real orchestra? The mixing sounds very... Odd.

No. It's all real strings bobb. Very strident. That might be why I'm getting a Donaggio (natch Herrmann) feel from it.
The credit reads 'string section of Macedonia Symphony Orchestra' (or some such).
I played it 3 times in a row today. Became obsessed with the title track/3 and Finale/Execution cue.
