Last time I tried to use my smart phone I realised I didn't know how to make a call, take a call, or send a text message on it.

It was a big learning curve for me too. But I got the basics down. A smart phone is a fantastic piece of hardware and software. (Privacy issues aside) I can just ask what the weather is without searching, I can ask it to find a location on the fly, especially useful when you need to divert to another location while driving. My iPhone can be used as a flash light, lots more useful and efficient stuff. Yet I know I only use a small percentage of its functions.

The problem is manufactures don't care about desktop computers anymore so their usefulness have gone down the drain. They're so not user friendly.

That's the "free market" for ya. PCs seem to be geared for gaming and home entertainment these days. It's time I replaced my PC, but I'll probably have to get it custom built (which supposedly isn't that hard since you can buy the components and plug them together).
If you find something you like, whether it's clothes, food, car, etc, get at least two because they won't be the same when you need a replacement.

A friend of mine gave me what I THINK is a tablet.... I've never used it.

I'd love to replace my laptop with an iPad, but Apple won't allow iPads to work with a wireless mouse. My fingertip or a stylus isn't precise enough.

Currently, the perfect PC would actually be a smartphone with a docking station... at home, put it in a dock if you want and you have a monitor or two, a keyboard, mouse, extra data storage, all what you need to actually work with the thing (or make funny gifs and post them in forums). And then you can take it out of the dock and carry it with you everywhere. I'm not at that point yet (Android phone/Windows Notebooks), though such systems already exist, but the day will come where it will be the norm, and I'm looking forward to it. Currently, smartphone and dekstop software is too different, but I imagine the day will come where the software can adapt to how you use your device.

FWIW, I've stayed away from Apple products just out of stubbornness since for ever. In the meantime I've had a dirt-cheapo Android tablet (rubbish - I turn it on every now and again to read a bit of a couple of ebooks but nothing much more), and a Windows tablet PC (initially really rather good, but now also rubbish since Windows' own updates bloat have filled the hard disk to the point that nothing else AT ALL fits on it and nor do any more of its own updates ... so that gets plugged into a set of speakers solely to play back podcasts & radio show catch-up services).
Most of my time is spent on a largish laptop.
When I want to do more heavy-duty Photoshop or page layout, I'll fire up the desktop as it's got 2 monitors and a small wacom tablet. That is a no-brand jobbie, which at least does make hardware upgrades relatively easy these days (have recently stuck a bigger hard disk and more RAM in it).

Phone-wise I've recently upgraded from an old Huawei Android (which was suffering pretty much the same thing as the Windows tablet - i.e. full up of nothing) to a newer other-brand Android (I don't intend to fill it up with pointless apps, but at least this one's got some breathing space for storing photos etc.).

Interesting thread to bump. In some cases this has come to pass as I suggested and in others not so much.

I have a full sized laptop that works well for most things but I haven't used it as often as my 10-inch windows 10 tablet on the go. I travel with a bluetooth keyboard and bluetooth mouse (and now bluetooth headphones). When I am doing any serious work - drafting documents, filling out forms, I use the windows tablet and can do most of anything I need to. It works enough that if I am working remotely for a week or two, I can get most of what I need done on it.

I do still have a desktop computer though, and recently replaced mine. See link below what I bought, though it is not in stock anymore. The major important thing for anyone on here who is looking to buy a desktop is to get something with plenty of ram. 16gb is best to future proof the thing. Getting a decent video card also helps just to avoid having to buy your own to replace it. Getting a SSD for the main drive with a secondary standard hard drive helps speed things up as well.

All that being said, I know a LOT of attorneys who have replaced their main work entirely with an ipad or Surface Pro. So it is a good mix of what I predicted.

I should note I still use my android tablet when traveling because it has a much better time downloading Netflix shows than my windows Tablet does. For some reason Windows app keeps wanting me to be online even though the shows are supposed to be available offline. I also use the old android tablet occasionally for certain times I need to hand digital documents to someone to view.
