It was noted in a posting on the upcoming release of "Somewhere In Time" on Blu-ray that it'll have Ultra-Violet, and I was about to post the following until I decided to start a new thread on the subject:

Regarding Ultra-Violet, am I the only one who detests it? I had to open 2 different accounts, one with one studio whose Blu-ray releases had it and another with a second studio. And then when I bought the Blu-ray of "The Remains of the Day," it turned out that it was the British release and although the U-V slip listed one studio, they didn't carry it in the U.S. and I was unable to contact the correct studio to get access to it. And despite several attempts, it has been impossible to get the Ultra-Violet downloads for the 5 "Twilight" movies -- when I go to their redeem movie.com it keeps taking me to one of the U-V accounts I've already opened for another studio and they don't recognize the redeem code, so it has been impossible to redeem those 5 movies. If it's this hard just to redeem them and then hard to find which studio carries each of the ones I've redeemed, why bother? It is SO exasperating! Give me the iTunes Store ANY day!!!

Funny - my experience is exactly the opposite...UV copies and a Flixster account works just fine...but iTunes pisses me about too much (and still insists I have already downloaded Wolverine, when I clearly haven't...).

Though the process has been described to me I still don't quite get it and find the whole thing a convoluted mess. I'll stick with physical discs unless what I want can only be had via a digital file.

Solium: I bought the Blu-rays, so I have the hard discs on all of them, but these are extra copies that one downloads to the computer and any other media one has, like tablets.

It worked just fine for me the first 2 times. But then I got one for a different studio and had to open another U-V account. And then there was the Blu-ray that had the British U-V that I couldn't download here. And the codes that keep taking me to an earlier U-V account that doesn't recognize the codes. So if you had asked me a few months ago I too would have said that it wasn't bad, but since then it has all gone in the opposite direction.

Thanks for the explanation. Very weird indeed. I'm not buying a lot of BluRays right now so I don't think I have any with the UV option. I guess I don't see the need for it though. If I want to watch a movie I'll put in the disc and watch it on my television. I'm not one for watching movies on portable devices or computers. But I can see the benefit for those that view programs over multiple devices.

My experience has been similar to Mr Greg's. I recently started registering UV movies, and found that I could have just the UV and Flixster accounts and that so far has handled everything. The only issue I have with UV is that the Flixster app seems to cause a slight pause/stutter every 7.5 seconds on playback, on two different PCs. I've raised it as a 'bug' with Flixster, which they've acknowledged, but haven't heard anything back regarding it getting fixed yet.

What little experience I've had with streaming (Netflix and iTunes) it's not ready for prime time. It's a huge step backwards in service and quality. Picture quality fluctuates, picture starts and stops, picture just stops. Garbage service. Can't believe ppl are so eager for this. If Netflix streaming wasn't so dirt cheap I would have dropped it right after my free month was up.

solium: Re: "If Netflix streaming wasn't so dirt cheap I would have dropped it right after my free month was up."

So dirt cheap? My monthly bill to Netflix is $16.70, with about half of it for shipped DVDs (worry about availability of Blu-rays, so haven't upgraded) and about half for streaming. The problem is that I'll go MONTHS without streaming anything, and they are forever dropping things I like to stream, and so if I pay about $100 a year for a minuscule amount of streaming, that's not exactly "dirt cheap." Indeed, I've been thinking seriously about dropping the streaming part of my service. I have just about all the premium cable channels and often find that I've streamed things (or received DVDs) that were also available on some cable channels. I wish they could download some of these cable schedules to our BRAINS so it would be easier to keep track of everything!

I only have the streaming service. It's $8 dollars a month. Right now I'm finding a lot to watch, especially British television series Ive never seen. Also I'm discovering a lot of old movies I haven't seen in 25 or 35 years. Though I suspect I'll run out of content at some point, unless they acquire larger content providers.
