I found a case for the Prometheus Black Stallion double-bill for $2. Tragically, there was CD-R with a magic marker label inside the case. 2. I found a copy of Chris Franke's "Universal Soldier," the original Varese release, for $1. But, examining the disc, I saw that it was scratched to hell, like someone had been keeping it with their steel wool. 3. Someone must have been a James Horner fan, because I found *two* copies of Swing Kids and a further Glory for $1 each. Nothing wrong with any of them except that I already have the discs. So that led me to think: what are some used CD "near misses" you have had along similar lines? Things like: -no CD or wrong CD in case -CD highly desirable but scratched to hell -incredible bargain price for album you once sought -another customer bought it before you could -etc.    Posted:   Dec 20, 2013 - 9:40 PM     By:   Solium   (Member) Surprised with the poor condition of the CD's you purchased. Most used CD/DVD shops I am aware of carefully inspect what ever they buy used before putting it on the shelf. I used to buy a lot of used CD's back when the stores carried soundtracks. Never got a bad CD. The best grail find was an OOP copy of The Muppet Movie for $10 dollars that was otherwise going for $45 dollars on Amazon and Ebay.    Posted:   Dec 20, 2013 - 9:56 PM     By:   DeviantMan   (Member) Right now in Hawaii, The only used CD store of any merit is a Japanese styled store known as Book•Off. Locations At Ala Moana & Pearlridge. All used soundtracks sell for $3 I lucked out last AUG when I found the score CD to TRANSFORMERS - Steve Jablonsky (1st film!!). Freshly sold to the store. Things like: -no CD or wrong CD in case -CD highly desirable but scratched to hell -incredible bargain price for album you once sought -another customer bought it before you could -etc. Bad experiences: 1) I once ordered the Varese "Conan the Barbarian" from SecondSpin.com and received the case without the CD. 2) I once bought "Memoirs of a Geisha" used for $1, only to discover the disc was a fancy CD-R. 3) And the weirdest: I ordered Elmer Bernstein's "Genocide" from SecondSpin.com, and when I played the disc it was just a random collection of bird sounds. I still have it, and it appears to be a legitimate CD. So I have no idea what happened. My best good experience: --In one trip to a small CD store in 2003, I found sealed, long-box copies of "The Accidental Tourist," "MacArthur," "Earthquake" and Mark Isham's "The Beast."    Posted:   Dec 21, 2013 - 9:14 AM     By:   Timothy J. Phlaps   (Member) I found the ESCAPE FROM L.A. score for cheap, bought it, got it home and the disc was the "songs from and inspired by" album. Never managed to get a refund on that. Did manage to get a proper copy a few months later. Also got the Muir Matheson KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE and THE ACCIDENTAL TOURIST, on separate occasions, in a CD/video store up the coast in Encinitas. There have been others, but those stand out. I used to pore over the CD's at the flea market and thrift stores, but have lately stopped the practice, since the effort I have to put out has not been fruitful. San Diego used to have more than half a dozen used-CD places; now it has only a couple, and they're not that good. The same thing has happened to most of the used book stores as well. Everything has been subsumed by the internet. Now, I do most of my shopping on Amazon. Or, I'll find about something somewhere else, and look for it on Amazon. (Amazon doesn't have everything: I still get most of my soundtracks from SAE, and Amazon sometimes doesn't have certain cast albums.)    Posted:   Dec 21, 2013 - 12:12 PM     By:   Chris Avis   (Member) I ordered an expensive copy of Bruce Broughton's "The Old Man and The Sea" from Amazon. I received a CDR with a printed label on the CD identifying it as "composed by Brain Broughton". Thankfully Amazon refunded my money and I managed to get a legit copy a year later. Sometimes I even found multiple copies, like Apollo 13 (the expanded score promo) or As Good As It Gets (For Your Consideration Score Promo). In the later years however (after 2000), most store owners wised up and either sold these promos for a lot more money or took them out of the shelves themselves to sell them on ebay. I never really had a bad experience in the sense that I would always inspect the cd (and often sample it) in the store before buying it, so I knew what I was getting. When you buy online however, there is always the chance you won't get what you thought you were getting.    Posted:   Dec 21, 2013 - 5:11 PM     By:   SBD   (Member) The time: October 2011 The place: Manhattan While walking to my hotel from New York Comic Con, I happen upon a record store. The soundtrack section is pretty slim, but then I find Intrada's release of John Scott's LIONHEART. For a mere $5.99. Looks pretty professional. Why the hell not? It wasn't until I got back home days later that I discovered that there was a CD-R inside. It wasn't the real thing. However, the CD sounds like it could be the real thing and the liner notes were there, albeit photocopied. I count this as a win.
