I faithfully archive all tracks on computer and back them up, in case I ever get obsessed with a score, but a lot of things go unplayed. This despite the fact that THE OMEGA MAN (first edition) and CARRIE (Kritzerland edition) both have Easter eggs on their final tracks. But today I was checking the final tracks of some extra-long CDs in case there was trouble at the end and they hadn't ripped properly, which is not unheard of. Anyway, I just discovered the "Main Title (Alternate)" at the end of STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT, and it's a sweetheart. I wonder what else I'm missing. Some of the most interesting stuff is the extras / alternates. Normally, I do listen to the whole thing but I have bought CDs for specific tracks. I have also bought CDs and found I didn't care to listen to some of the tracks. I have not listened to all the extra stuff on disc 3 of the LLL ST:TMP edition. Most often these are the bonus sections of source music, marches, mariachi fiesta (for example Cannon for Cordoba: I can't stand the bonus Mexican music), 30-second classical snippets etc. and I have no interest in that. On the other hand, when there are bonus sections of alternate score tracks, I usually play these. That said, I generally appreciate that the producers do include all of this bonus material. Even though I may skip it on 97 titles out of 100, I'm happy to find an interesting source bonus track here and there. Also it's very funny to find something undetectable - for example, I read Heaven Can Wait thread while I waited for my CD. I have to admit that the FSM "Ben-Hur" is one I've never made it through all of the supplementary alternates. I absolutely loved every bit of the Ben-Hur set, and felt that there was enough of a difference in the various recordings and alternates to warrant many repeat listenings of most, if not all, of the tracks. Though I guess it comes down to how much you love the particular music you are listening to. I do recall having a difficult time getting through the many alternates, and additional music, and demos, and more additional music for The Wild Bunch. Sometimes the "alternate" becomes more of a fave than the "real" track. But not always, surely. MOST of the time you don't have a track and its seven micro-changed alternates all in a row. When I listen to Star Trek: The Motion Picture I'm not listening to all five versions of Ilia's theme all in a row. The RCA Star Wars main title OTOH...
