I have to admit, I seldom get around to the alternates and extras on most expanded editions. I faithfully archive all tracks on computer and back them up, in case I ever get obsessed with a score, but a lot of things go unplayed. This despite the fact that THE OMEGA MAN (first edition) and CARRIE (Kritzerland edition) both have Easter eggs on their final tracks.

But today I was checking the final tracks of some extra-long CDs in case there was trouble at the end and they hadn't ripped properly, which is not unheard of. Anyway, I just discovered the "Main Title (Alternate)" at the end of STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT, and it's a sweetheart. I wonder what else I'm missing.

So do you plumb the depths of every expanded CD, and if so, have you hit upon any gems?

Yep. Every time. Some of the most interesting stuff is the extras / alternates. Die Hard 3 is a good example - Escape.

Why would someone buy a CD and not listen to it all?

Normally, I do listen to the whole thing but I have bought CDs for specific tracks. I have also bought CDs and found I didn't care to listen to some of the tracks. It is perfectly normal.

Agreed. I have not listened to all the extra stuff on disc 3 of the LLL ST:TMP edition. No interest for me.

I don't play (and have never heard) the bonus tracks on lots of my CD's. Most often these are the bonus sections of source music, marches, mariachi fiesta (for example Cannon for Cordoba: I can't stand the bonus Mexican music), 30-second classical snippets etc. and I have no interest in that. On the other hand, when there are bonus sections of alternate score tracks, I usually play these.

That said, I generally appreciate that the producers do include all of this bonus material. Even though I may skip it on 97 titles out of 100, I'm happy to find an interesting source bonus track here and there. And where else should this music ever be included?

Best thing about expanded scores is discovering new music. I play it all. Then I assemble the best possible playlist from everything available.

On a first time listen, sure, but not so much on repeat listens (i.e. the re-recordings on KELLY'S HEROES, the myriad renditions of the love theme on SPACEBALLS).

I usually play the bonus/alternate/unused/etc. cues the first time I listen to a score that includes them, out of curiosity. After that, not so much.

Of course I played all!
Also it's very funny to find something undetectable - for example, I read Heaven Can Wait thread while I waited for my CD. I didn't notice any word about "Easter egg" at the end, so this was really fun to find it, 'cause I really didn't wait for more music from this CD.

At least on first listen, yes, I play every track on the discs I purchase.

Yes, as a general rule though I tend to skip source music as most of the times it takes me out of the score. Also alternate takes of cues where I can't tell what's suppose to be alternate about them smile

Yes. If I've ordered and play it, I make sure to play all of it.

Almost always. But a few discs and sets with multiple tiny variations of the same cue have worn me out to the point where I give up. I have to admit that the FSM "Ben-Hur" is one I've never made it through all of the supplementary alternates. I love the score, but I find nothing at all enjoyable about hearing the same piece over and over again with very slight variations.

I absolutely loved every bit of the Ben-Hur set, and felt that there was enough of a difference in the various recordings and alternates to warrant many repeat listenings of most, if not all, of the tracks. Though I guess it comes down to how much you love the particular music you are listening to. I do recall having a difficult time getting through the many alternates, and additional music, and demos, and more additional music for The Wild Bunch. By the last track it truly was "the end of the line" for me.

Yes. At least the first time.

Sometimes the "alternate" becomes more of a fave than the "real" track. But not always, surely. MOST of the time you don't have a track and its seven micro-changed alternates all in a row. When I listen to Star Trek: The Motion Picture I'm not listening to all five versions of Ilia's theme all in a row. The RCA Star Wars main title OTOH...

Ben Hur might be a bit of a slog. smile

Most of the time I listen to music on shuffle, but when I listen through to the full album program, I listen to everything on the discs.

If I've paid for it, I take the time to listen to the whole thing. smile
