The music doesn't really come front and center much until about halfway through the episode. Then there is a nice dance that I hope is mixed better for the score release. There's an action cue a bit later that is pretty good but made me wish McCreary hadn't talked about Braveheart and Rob Roy in interviews because it's not on that level. So far it's good but not great McCreary, certainly not breaking any new ground for him (some bits could have come right out of Da Vinci's Demons). I hope he gets to pull out the stops a bit later in the series.

Just caught the first episode of the show last night with my wife. I knew without knowing that it was Bear as soon as I heard it the first cue. As Elmer once said, his music has a personality, and it's very evident here. I hope the budget allowed for a bigger ensemble at some point during the season - the show has a cinematic quality that would be bolstered by a fuller sound, but for now the orchestration is mainly for a smaller folk ensemble. That's not really a complaint; the music is lovely, with a gentle lilting quality not often heard in Bear's music with the kinds of projects he gets. It's like a softer highlands cousin of his work on BLACK SAILS.

The show itself is a bit slow, and the narration is AWFUL, but it has promise. At this point I'd watch it just to hear the score.

I agree with the two comments above. It is a nice start as heard in the first episode but I'm not yet convinced it is going to be a standout score. I do like the folk elements and some of the themes used here. Sadly, his action music is still generally lacking and all sounds the same to me.

Nice! I didn't realize the vocalist on the track was Bear's wife.
