The music doesn't really come front and center much until about halfway through the episode. Then there is a nice dance that I hope is mixed better for the score release. There's an action cue a bit later that is pretty good but made me wish McCreary hadn't talked about Braveheart and Rob Roy in interviews because it's not on that level. So far it's good but not great McCreary, certainly not breaking any new ground for him (some bits could have come right out of Da Vinci's Demons). I hope he gets to pull out the stops a bit later in the series.

Just caught the first episode of the show last night with my wife. I knew without knowing that it was Bear as soon as I heard it the first cue. As Elmer once said, his music has a personality, and it's very evident here. I hope the budget allowed for a bigger ensemble at some point during the season - the show has a cinematic quality that would be bolstered by a fuller sound, but for now the orchestration is mainly for a smaller folk ensemble. That's not really a complaint; the music is lovely, with a gentle lilting quality not often heard in Bear's music with the kinds of projects he gets. It's like a softer highlands cousin of his work on BLACK SAILS.

The show itself is a bit slow, and the narration is AWFUL, but it has promise. At this point I'd watch it just to hear the score.

I agree with the two comments above. It is a nice start as heard in the first episode but I'm not yet convinced it is going to be a standout score. I do like the folk elements and some of the themes used here. Sadly, his action music is still generally lacking and all sounds the same to me.

Nice! I didn't realize the vocalist on the track was Bear's wife.

(January 12, 2015 – Culver City, CA) Madison Gate Records announced the release of OUTLANDER Original Television Soundtrack, Vol. 1 in digital and CD formats on February 10, 2015. The album features original music composed by Emmy® Award-Winner Bear McCreary (EVERLY, THE WALKING DEAD, DA VINCI’S DEMONS) along with period-accurate songs adapted by McCreary for the television series, including the main title theme, “The Skye Boat Song,” performed by Raya Yarbrough. The album was produced in collaboration with McCreary’s Sparks & Shadows label.

The OUTLANDER series follows the story of Claire Randall, a married combat nurse from 1945 who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743, where she is immediately thrown into an unknown world where her life is threatened. When she is forced to marry Jamie, a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior, a passionate affair is ignited that tears Claire’s heart between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives. Adapted from Diana Gabaldon’s international best-selling books, the OUTLANDER series spans the genres of romance, science fiction, history and adventure into one epic tale.

Composer McCreary has been fascinated with the folk music of Jacobean Scotland from an early age. “When I first learned to drive, I was blasting bagpipes from my car speakers,” he jokes. His fascination quickly became a passion: “toward the end of high school, I began researching folk songs of the Jacobite uprising. I was awestruck by their ability to communicate tales of tragedy and triumph through lyrics with double meaning, woven along deceptively simple melodic lines and evocative harmonic progressions,” McCreary notes. OUTLANDER Executive Producer Ronald D. Moore, who had also collaborated with McCreary on BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, knew of McCreary’s passion for the period’s music, and turned to him for the series, so much of which is set in the era.

McCreary was ecstatic about the chance to head to the Highlands for musical inspiration. “From the beginning, I wanted to draw predominantly from Scottish instrumentation and folk music,” he explains. “Instruments such as the fiddle, bagpipes, accordion, penny whistle and bodhrán (a type of frame drum) form the backbone of the score, supported by orchestral strings, haunting vocals and larger percussion.”

“OUTLANDER has given me the opportunity to write the kind of score I have been dreaming about for my entire life,” says McCreary. “I am thrilled that Madison Gate Records and Sparks & Shadows have collaborated to release this soundtrack from the first eight episodes, but we’re just getting started; more drama and music await!”

The second half of the first season of OUTLANDER returns to STARZ in the U.S. on April 4, 2015. OUTLANDER Original Television Soundtrack, Vol. 1 will be available in digital and CD formats on February 10, 2015.

Is this the music for the whole season or just the episodes aired so far? Because only half of the episodes have been aired.

It's music from the first eight episodes, i.e. the first half of season one. It's seems to be selling well. It's been in the top 5 soundtracks and the top 50 cds overall on amazon for the last week or so (the highest I saw it reach was #2 soundtracks, #28 overall) and it's not even out for another two weeks. Really looking forward to this one.

It also says 'Volume 1' on the top of it, so hooray! (Most likely) 2 CD releases for 1 season! More music!

And a nice surprise as I recall Bear saying last year that a soundtrack would probably have to wait until the end of season 1.

Link with the full track 'Castle Leoch' from the forthcoming 'Outlander' album. Nicely weaving the traditional 'Loch Lomond' into the score. Bagpipes!

Sales continue to look strong on amazon. Currently #13 overall best-selling cd at the moment. #2 in soundtracks.

LLL haven't announced signed cds for this one. Would it be the first Bear cd that they haven't sold copies of?

Finally!
Just finished listening the whole thing. Enjoyed it very much and I'll probably listen to it again today. The show has really grown on me, I'm looking forward to the second part of the season and a Volume 2 of McCreary's music.

Here's a little medley of three recurring themes in the show. It's just based on some notes Bear posted on his blog.

Boy Caitriona Balfe looks stunning in this show and her acting is pretty great.

The show was definitely my big surprise of 2014, and I absolutely love the CD. My only nitpick is that I would have liked it to contain a bit more music (the album runs 51 minutes), but at least with the Season being split up, that's really only the first half of an album set. smile
