Well, the day has finally arrived - Warner Bros. Just announced the Batman TV Series is getting a home video release in 2014. Can a beefy Bat-Box Set of scores from the show be far behind?

This seems RIPE for LaLa Land Records....

Wow! Not that I'm interested in getting it myself, but I'm glad for those of you who are, that they finally worked out all the rights issues that were holding it up. Cheers to your future enjoyment!

This makes my day;my week;my month;and maybe my year. Now, the only thing that could
surpass this would be for Warner to release "The Green Hornet" t.v. show on dvd also.

An actual TV music release? Gotta be an improvement on this stuff:

Surprised there have been no new posts on this topic, or has someone started another thread? I saw in a recent thread someone posted that LaLa has no intentions of doing a TV soundtrack, but the comment could be without foundation, I don't know. Yeah, the 66 movie soundtrack is great, but it's missing some cool elements from the TV show. Would love to see this happen.

This has been covered in a thread elsewhere, ISTR.

I thought Riddle's music worked very well with the visuals in the series - very well indeed. It suited the comic strip nature of the show, and was loud and brash and strident.

Listening to the FSM and La La Land editions of the music from the film, I'm struck again by the same sentiments. However... those very qualities that make the music work exceptionally well on the television make it a far tougher listen - for me anyway - on CD.

I love that Nelsonm Riddle album. It's a fun mixture of score and dialogue. I had a cassette back some time ago, which is now gone. A remastered CD or that with both the tracks with dialogue, and score only, would be most welcomed.

It's an interesting CD, 'cause best I can tell, none of the score on it is actually used in the show. Sure, it does some moments of themes like the opening credits and the Penguin theme, but they're all clearly re-recordings that expand upon the material.

Most especially interesting, the beautiful Mr. Freeze piano music, is not in the show; I don't know if this is dropped or if it's actually an arrangement of a classical work. The cue in question:

It's a shame the actor was so bad he wasn't invited back -- he WAS Mr. Freeze.

And the main title theme which recieves an entirely new reframe of music which is not used in the show. A recording showcasing it:

The Neal Hefti LP is baffeling. Clearly it was nothing more than an attempt to capitalize on the success of the theme and show, but instead of going with "Inspired By" or some other wording, it instead put character name's in cues, suggesting score from the show, but it's clearly not; not only because it sounds nothing like it, but also because Hefti didn't score a single episode of the series.

Hefti was originally going to score the show, or at least the pilot, but in the end wasn't able to because of other work. Thank goodness. If this music is any indication of the route he would have gone, with hindsight Nelson Riddle was the superior choice. Even Warren Baker's two or three episodes are better.

I asked MV about it, I think through e-mail, something like three years ago; I dont' recall the exact response, but it basically wasn't possible at the time. Not even the Riddle LP. If that was because of the tangled web of rights issues, hopefully that's cleared up and he'll do it. I recall him one time saying that LLLR's was the Bat-label.

The Hefti LPs contain some great tracks, like "Sewer Lady."

The piano music is by Chopin:

I remember MV saying that he had plans to release everything Batman-related (if I remember correctly).

I think I'd be interested in a one or two disc 'best-of' Batman TV scores, but I don't think I'd be up for a complete box set in the 'Star Trek' fashion.

That said, I wouldn't want my limited preferences to sway what the hard-core fans want.

I wonder, if this music got licensed, whether there'd be scope for a very limited complete box for those who want it and a one or two disc 'best-of' for the rest of us.

Just a thought.

Cheers

Yes, that sums up my feelings too.

Lukas chimed in somewhere that he'd listened to the TV tracks back when they were investigating the possibility of a release and thought they didn't make for good listening.

Then, of course, people yelled at him for having an informed opinion.

That's the way I remember it, at least, before I checked out of the thread.

Proof of the adage, "one man's trash is another man's treasure".
Listenability is one aspect, yes, but would there be enough material to fill even one disc?

The CD OST from the 60s Batman Film provides me with as much Bat-music as I need, along with the Fox LP and the two Hefti LPs.

I could go for a nice robust 3 or 4 CD set.

That's not the only piece whose real author isn't mentioned on the album (hi, J.P. Sousa track for "Two Perfectly Ordinary People").

Given the show ran for two and a half years, surely you could get at least one disc's worth out of it (although it didn't have the variety of composers other fan faves have).
