Definitely is not a traditional song. By all know Donovan wrote the English lyrics and Ortolani wrote the melody. However a web search states all songs written by Donovan. At Donovan's website he claims the main song as his so the question will remain. To me is among the prettiest unreleased in original form (English version) soundtracks ever. Donovan released a new recording of the songs in acoustic versions in I-Tunes , I dislike them as newly recorded. So up to now the DVD is the only way to enjoy this wonderful score and songs. Maybe someone knows more about it.

I have the Italian soundtrack, with the songs in Italian. Much-maligned when originally released, critics said Zefferelli made St. Francis and followers look like "flower children." Which worked for me. Lovely film, with beautiful work all around. No soundtrack for English version, because it was such a flop. This was the movie Zefferelli made after having such an international smash with ROMEO AND JULIET, and everyone had perhaps unrealistic expectations. (They always do. Look at the films famous directors make after major successes: ACE IN THE HOLE, Billy Wilder's follow-up to SUNSET BOULEVARD, HEAVEN'S GATE, Michael Cimino's follow-up to THE DEER HUNTER. Even THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS, Orson Welles' follow-up to CITIZEN KANE, though considered by many actually a better film, was nevertheless a major flop, and spelled the end, in effect, of Welle's career.)

Being a huge Donovan fan and knowing most of his songs I'd say the long melodic lines on song "Brother Sun Sister Moon" are not typical of his songwriting. So probably he just wrote the English lyrics on that song. The other songs to me are clearly written by him. Ortolani was a superb melodist and am certain Ken Thorne's score was based on his melodies for the most. Hope one day the English version score and songs are properly released.
