FRIDAY, JANUARY 24
THE DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS---Mike Newell (HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE, DONNIE BRASCO) will direct the latest movie based on the classic 1951 sci fi novel. The script is by Neil Cross (PACIFIC RIM) with Sam Raimi as co-producer. The novel was made into a 1963 movie starring Howard Keel and two British miniseries in 1981 and 2009.
BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN---sources claim Ben Affleck will wear two different Batman suits. The first is the traditional "grey and blue" suit. The second is described as, "More armored like the one in the BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS and Kingdom Come comics... the plating is silver/white. The plates are attached to a black undercloth and don't cover his entire body so we see that undercloth at the joints. Supposedly, it looks incredible. Equally, or maybe even better-looking than the other suit and it's leagues above and beyond Christian Bale's suit from what I'm told."
A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST---photo released from the Seth McFarlane Western movie starring McFarlane, Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson, Amanda Seyfried, Giovanni Ribisi and Neil Patrick Harris in which a cowardly sheep farmer takes on the gunslinger husband of the beautiful woman he loves.
THE HATEFUL EIGHT---Quentin Tarantino's leaked script for his canceled Western movie involves three men, including two bounty hunters, who are transporting a prisoner and enter a haberdashery where they encounter a former Confederate Army general, a hangman, a cowboy and a Frenchman.
TERMINATOR: GENESIS---producer Megan Ellison (ZERO DARK THIRTY, AMERICAN HUSTLE) has withdrawn her Annapurna Pictures from the reboot franchise. Her brother David Ellison (MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE-GHOST PROTOCOL, WORLD WAR Z, STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS) and his Skydance Productions remain and will provide 66% of the budget. The Ellisons are the children of Oracle CEO Larry Ellison.
STAR WARS: EPISODE VII---JJ Abrams commented on if he will shoot the new movies in IMAX,
"The problem with IMAX is it's a very loud camera. It's a very unreliable camera. Only so much film can be in the camera. You can't really do intimate scenes with it. It's slow. They break down often. Having said that, they're working on digital versions of these and so there may be a version one day. But we're going to be shooting this next movie on film."
NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM---Ben Kingsley has joined the sequel cast as an Egyptian pharaoh. Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, Owen Wilson and Rebel Wilson also star.
TO REACH THE CLOUDS---3D movie underway by Robert Zemeckis (FORREST GUMP) based on the documentary MAN ON WIRE which told the story of French high wire artist Philippe Petit who crossed the World Trade Center towers on a tight rope in 1974.
ABC---ordered four pilots. THE VISITORS is based on Ray Bradbury's short story ZERO HOUR about an alien invasion. Steven Spielberg is co-producer. FOREVER is about an immortal New York medical examiner who teams up with a female detective to solve cases. EXPOSED is about an investigative reporter who forms questionable alliance to get the truth. An untitled semi-autobiographical sitcom is from Kevin Hart.
HBO---canceled its two comedies HELLO GIRLS and FAMILY TREE. It is developing a US remake of the Danish tv series BOGEN about Denmark's first female prime minister.
MARVEL'S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.---Deathlok (J. August Richards) will appear on the February 4 episode. Lady Sif (Jaimie Alexander) and Lorelei (Elene Satine) will battle each other in a future episode.
SALEM---new WGN America series about the Salem witch trials in 17th century Massachusetts. Premiere is April 20.
UTOPIA---new Fox realty series in which 15 people are placed in an undeveloped area for a year in order "to create their own civilization."
