It's kinda like they want it to look like Win8, for reasons I cannot fathom. Not a fan.

It's regular tiling of the plane.

See Penrose, R. for a more egaging discourse on the subject.

Everyone is doing this shit. They are designing for small mobile devices. Frak the desktop computer user is the motto now.

I'm not so sure that the 'small mobile devices' community likes it any more than I do... and perhaps even less. smile

I visit MSNBC at least 2-3 times a day. LOVE it!

And to gone, your link is to the NBC News site, NOT MSNBC, as you wrote in your title. Try this:

http://www.msnbc.com

Follow-Up Note: The title of this thread was changed from MSNBC to NBCNEWS.

It looks like wordpress made love to instagram and myspace; far too visual.

I agree. My 2 kids who are smart phone savy and tech junkies took a look at it and called it overkill.

Yuk.

Other bad site redesigns: Answers.com - having the answer text superimposed over an irrelevant photograph.

Copy cats. Once a new style becomes the "in thing", everyone copies it with no thought of it's functionality. Small devices are rolling picture oriented because the screens are so small.

Companies think most of the youth market are on mobile devices. (which they probably are) and they conclude this is the market they need to design for regardless of the platform.

Edit: I've also noticed this annoying new trend of designing applications and websites which require unnecessary point and clicking in order to navigate. itunes (and sorry) Intrada come to mind.

I guess you're correct... I equate the 2 so much I consider them the same. Anyway, the msnbc site is pretty awful too when I look at it.

The things is... I tend to be a bit of a news hound and I generally watch NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams who refers (I believe) to MSNBC quite a bit. The 2 have become one and the same to me; branding wise.

What will be interesting to see is how things go as the tech world changes and MS's old leadership position continues to erode (via Android & Apple). Will it be AndroidNBC, or GoogleNBC, or AppleNBC in a few years? smile

A news hound is exactly how I describe myself as well (my family says addict?) and MSNBC and NBC are my sources of choice as well. When I want straight news I watch Brian Williams and when I want to wade into the political poop I turn on MSNBC. I always took comfort in the fact that I could catch up online if I was unable to grab a peek at the tube. Now when I look at the two newly configured sites, I feel dizzy like I have been watching a Japanese video game. I have actually started perusing CNN online so you know I am not happy lol.

edwzoomom: I watch some of the same, although in my case I go to my AT&T U-verse HD -- CNN channel 1202, MSNBC, 1215 -- preferring to watch them on the widescreen, but with the remote in hand!
