Marco is currently working on the crime drama The Drop (formerly Animal Rescue), based on a story by Dennis Lehane and starring Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, and James Gandolfini.
The movie opens in less than 4 weeks. Any news about the score album?
My educated guess is there will not be one. It is a very low-key score and with all the other CD love going on (November Man, The Giver, The Homesman -- no CD announced yet but it's looking extremely likely -- and probably Woman in Black 2 down the line) my prediction is that The Drop will be the one that falls through the cracks.
That's unfortunate because this looks to be the most interesting of the bunch.
I hope you get a chance to hear it. From what I hear it works very well in the film. It's a very moody and subdued score, ambient and textural, primarily synth.
Personally I find it to be the least interesting ... perhaps it has a slight edge in enjoyment factor over November Man to my ears but The Giver, 1864, WiB2, The Coup, and The Homesman are all so very much better. November Man and The Drop are less interesting than the rest because they are more standard genre exercises (although still excellent because they are Beltrami) but the others represent more inspired and creative compositions and place them as superb achievements by any standards.
Has he actually started working on WiB2? What about TRUE STORY? ;-)
Definitely hope that there will be some sort of release of The Drop as well - even some others such as 13 or Deadfall are miles ahead of many scores that got released officially.
Little I've heard from November Man sounds pretty good too... although it's nothing that would really push Marco in brand new direction like for example I am Dina, Flight of the Phoenix or Soul Surfer did, it still sounds like highly enjoyable score.
1864 is still my nr 1 most eagerly awaited score of this year... hopefully it will get some sort of official release sooner or later.

WiB2 was finished the end of July. It incorporates the first film's main theme but also has a great new theme and both films carry the same general sound. True Story should record very soon.
Deadfall is one...badass...score. Needs a retroactive release in a very urgent way.
Whether it's the labels or Beltrami himself (or both), the one thing that continues to strongly disappoint year after year are the lack of retroactive unreleased Beltrami releases like Deadfall, Captivity, and most especially The Invisible. Not to mention expansions of older truncated releases. We were treated with the Scream/Mimic Deluxe double whammy but that was a textbook case of wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am, two wonderful amazing releases followed by nothing since (unless you count the limited edition In the Electric Mist, which is also wonderful).
Those samples are superb. This is the Marco Beltrami mode I much prefer to his bigger, more bombastic stuff. I think he excels at minimalistic scores rather than the bloated Terminator/iRobot stuff. I'll take Beltrami's The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, The Invisible and In the Electric Mist over the larger, more action driven scores like Hellboy, Live Free or Die Hard, World War Z, etc. His first "Scream" score was a home run as well. I also love "3:10 to Yuma." I feel his real musical personality comes out in the smaller, more reflective pieces he composes.

Saw the movie this weekend. Could well turn out to be my favorite film of the year. Tom Hardy is a revelation. And the score is fantastic. Can't for the life of me understand why there wouldn't be at least a digital release of it. But, seriously, the film is a major win and yet another successful Dennis Lehane adaptation for the big screen.

The score is pretty low key and atmospheric, but really helps the film along. I think it's one of Beltrami's better efforts of late - at least for me. I'd say there's about 30 minutes of score.

Haven't seen the film yet, but about 60 minutes of score were recorded (that includes a couple revised and alt cues), so if you estimate 30 minutes of score, either a lot of music was dropped for the final film or there is more music in the film than you think!
