It may not be his best score but I've got to vote for Interlude as it has one of the best melodies - ever ... Time.

Asking me that is one of the hardest questions for me to answer. I can think of 40 scores I would list.

It`s very easy for me because there is only one Delerue score that I actually like and that is Salvador.

I love his work for Truffaut. Criterion recently posted a "Three Reasons: Jules et Jim" video utilizing several cues from that score, and the those themes are now like old friends that bring joy. Can't wait to see that film again. I also hope "Such a Gorgeous Kid Like Me" eventually becomes available for viewing in the U.S. Hearing two cuts from that score in "Frances Ha" really whetted my appetite to experience that movie/score. The Nonesuch CD of Delerue cues from Truffaut films is one of my favorites.

I also very much enjoy Delerue's scores for Bertolucci's "The Conformist" and Russell's "Women in Love."

I'm not so shocked, it has that same boldness a lot of Conti music has, especially that ending track which is one of my favorite pieces of music ever.

There is so much fantastic stuff, I have a hard time picking a favourite. I don't have THE BLACK STALLION RETURNS, except maybe a track or two.

KING OF HEARTS.

That movie played for 2 years (!) at a little cinema in Boston, back in the early 70's. So, naturally, everyone went to see it. I mean, if it was playing that long, there must have been something in it worthwhile... (Originally, it had opened in this country, and flopped, but it took the public response to this little cinema, the Central Square Cinema in fact, to revive interest in it.)

Curiously, right around that time, I was, as always, looking for lp soundtracks, and found a used place, that had several branches around the city, that had tons of lp's for $1, and found some amazing soundtracks there, such as SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS, and, at one point, the original lp of Delerue's score for KING OF HEARTS, which I listened to so much it became my favorite. Ended up finding a whole pile of them, and giving them away to friends. That was fun.

I also like his score to A WALK WITH LOVE AND DEATH.

My favorite Delerue score always changes but at the moment it's HER ALIBI:

Followed by Something Wicked This Way Comes:

One has yet to be released on any format and the other is still awaiting a proper release.

Like MALEFICIO my favorites do change over the years to some extent right now my top 5 I think is- [no order] AGNUS OF GOD-85- INTERLUDE-68-THE ESCAPE ARTIST-83- JOE VS THE VOLCANO-90-HER ALIBI-89-Which to me indicates he stayed great right to the end. What a shame he died young, another decade at least of his music would have been grand.

I think if somebody said to me, "Name your favorite Delerue score, or die," I might have to die. There are so many great moments in film scores by Delerue, and, unfortunately, they are not all in the same film. There are at least a dozen scores I could name with wonderfully romantic, heartbreaking moments, and yet I couldn't narrow that dozen down to just one favorite.

I think your question is a great one, but I can't pick just one.

TO JOHN B ARCHIBALD-I always found the main theme to KING OF HEARTS, the most perfect melody, so simple short and addictive. Like a wonderful nursery rhyme you can hum all day.

Maybe there'll be a Delerue score in the upcoming batch I doubt it but it doesn't hurt to be hopeful.
