1. Sunrise (1927) (Murnau)

2. The General (1926) (Keaton/Bruckman)

3. The Gold Rush (1925) (Chaplin)

4. The Lodger (1927) (Hitchcock)

5. Battleship Potemkin (1925) (Eisenstein)

also: The Eagle, Phantom of the Opera, Underworld.

still need to see: Ben-Hur, Le fantome du Moulin-Rouge, The Freshman, Greed, The Last Laugh, Metropolis, Nana, Napoleon, Die Nibelung, Seven Chances, Seventh Heaven, Sherlock jr., The Thief of Bagdad, Waxworks, Wings.

This is as far back as my list-making goes. There certainly are some pre-1924 films that are favorites of mine (Cabiria, Intolerance, The Cabinet of Dr. Caliguri, etc.), but I need to do a great deal more viewing of silent-era cinema before I can discuss the 1927 - on back era with any competence!

Tell me what else is great from this time. smile
