US network broadcasts of the Olympics are known for their glossy production values, frequently tracking film music and/or library music into opening and closing segments, establishing shots, human interest pieces, etc. As has been discussed on the board in years past, identifying those pieces is part of the intrigue of watching the Olympics.

I will get the thread started with the NBC intro segment to Opening Ceremony last night. I do not recognize the music. It does not sound like it was composed for the segment. Rather, it sounds like a montage of three or four pieces, presumably film music and/or library music.

The promos on commercial television (NBCSN) sound like Thor: The Dark World to me. If not that, something else very familiar. Edit: Some Sochi commercials on Youtube are clearly "Trailer Music" cues from the likes of E.S. Posthumus.

Close. Audiomachine has provided three cues:

"We are thrilled to announce that NBC has again decided to use Audiomachine music to kick off the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Tune in to the beginning of the Winter Games Opening Ceremony Friday night to hear audiomachine favorites "Breaking Through" and "Equinox" along with the brand new Paul Dinletir penned composition "Deep Heart.” To celebrate our involvement in our third Olympics, we've assembled a digital EP, now available on iTunes, featuring our tracks used in tonight's broadcast and past Olympics."

@ ChristianKühn - Cool! Thanks for the info. The first cue in particular was driving me bats. I thought it was from one of the Thor scores.

Conversely, much of Thor 2 reminds of trailer music these days. Never thought I'd like this kind of constantly high-octane music and while it can and does blend into one big mass from time to time, stuff from, say, Two Steps From Hell, Audiomachine, Immediate Music or Future World Music often makes for a very engaging listening experience. If you have time and a care, listen to this Olympic compilation from the 2012 London Olympics, courtesy of Immediate Music: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9028F0ECF214715B

I suppose that many of these cues are recorded with actual musicians and singers helps. Sure, compositionally speaking, this music is cut from a rather "simple cloth", but its execution often makes me go "Hell yeah!". I just wish these companies would release more their work to the public...

Anyhoo, glad I could be of help.

Yeah, I think that about covers the three or four cue montage that I heard during the NBC intro. Thanks.

The Cyrillic alphabet segment was also aurally/visually interesting, albeit extremely repetitive. However, I am sure that was not an NBC production but one of the Sochi Olympic Committee.

I didn't notice any film music but it was good to hear so much classical music - Borodin, Stravinsky, Khachaturian, Tchaikovsky etc and various choirs, throughout the Opening Ceremony.

Thanks for the additional links. smile I agree with you "Two Steps From Hell, Audiomachine, Immediate Music " can be quite enjoyable if not over played.
