THE PRIDE AND THE PASSION is definately needed along with a new SODOM AND GOMORRAH,KING OF KINGS,HELEN OF TROY and of course THE VIKINGS.
I would contribute to a fund to get these done and I am sure I would not be alone,perhaps it might be achievable,any thoughts???

King of Kings? Since we have the entire score in pretty reasonable stereo sound I wouldn't have put that on my list.
It's a question of the quality of the elements really. I'm all for the original recordings if the sound doesn't diminish the music. Ben-Hur, for instance, has never had anything like a complete re-recording despite being one of the greatest scores of all time, at least partly because the original sound is so acceptable. KOK has a few more sound problems, like over-modulation, but overall allows the music to come through relatively unscathed. Sodom & Gomorrah, of course, is a completely different story. The sound is horribly scratchy. Some tracks are in mono, or psuedo mono, and one even switches from stereo to mono part way. The whole thing is just a mess.

I heartily endorse so many of the scores mentioned, from Salter and Skinner to Webb and Rozsa -- -- with THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER heading the list, of course. (Interested readers who have not already done so will find much about Schumann and his score in my book about the making of the film, HEAVEN AND HELL TO PLAY WITH).
I'll add one more of my own:
Addinsell SCROOGE (U.K., aka A CHRISTMAS CAROL in the USA)
Happily, two of my holy grails no longer need to be mentioned, as they will shortly be released together on an OST CD.....

I'm well aware of the David Newman conducted suite, which is wonderful to have -- as far as it goes. When Chandos included Addinsell in their series of film composers, they took the cheap, easy way out of simply re-recording that same brief suite. It's like when Charles Gerhardt recorded his Waxman album in the RCA series, it was thrilling to hear the "Creation" scene from BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, but those of us who knew and loved the score were hungry for all the other riches contained therein. We had to keep hoping for many more years before that dream finally was fulfilled.
SCROOGE was Addinsell's masterpiece. Dark choral passages for the damned souls, a heartbreaking string piece for Scrooge's lost love, (worthy of standing beside Walton's string pieces in HENRY V), and so much more...

There was a strange, brief period when I guess the book was officially out of print, having sold out its initial modest print run. and a few overly zealous and optimistic dealers on Amazon started pricing it at $1,000 or something ridiculous like that. But things leveled off shortly after that when my current publisher decided to keep the book available as a print-on-demand title.
So all's well again. And I also highly recommend as a companion volume Jeffrey Couchman's book, THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER: BIOGRAPHY OF A FILM.
