The 'Burbs opened on February 17th, 1989.

Anybody else love this film?

"'Bout a nine on the tension scale there, Reub."

I saw it in the theater, but a few weeks earlier as a sneak preview. My mom, brother and I went to see Three Fugitives with Nick Nolte and Martin Short. Just before it started, the manager came in to announce there was going to be a special sneak preview of a new Tom Hanks movie afterwards, and we were all invited to stay and watch it. After about a ten-minute break following our movie, it started. When it began, I remember fearing it was a horror movie (I was 10 at the time and not into horror yet), but before long the comedy was underway and the whole theater was just rolling in laughter the entire time.

Longest evening I ever spent in a movie theater, but well worth it. One of the funniest movies I've ever seen, and I still laugh as hard watching it today as I did back then. Terrific ensemble with every part perfectly cast. Wish we were getting a Blu-ray Special Edition in the US this year.

Speaking of anniversary involving Jerry Goldsmith. It was 10 years ago today that Dirk Brossé conducted the London Symphony Orchestra`s Jerry Goldsmith 75th Tribute Concert at the Barbican Hall.

Prior to that concert I had only been on a few film music concerts here in Sweden but that one became my very first film music concert outside of Sweden.

By the way any other FSM member who also was there?

Absolutely love this movie. Marvelous Goldsmith score, too.

Fun movie and score, I'll probably be picking up arrow video's blu-ray (which was slated for early 2014). Looking forward to it.

I remember being hugely disappointed by it when I first saw it at the cinema, coming after what I consider real Dante gems like The Howling, Gremlins and Innerspace.
I think it played much better on TV (it feels more like a TV movie to me) and my subsequent viewings of it have improved its overall appeal to me.
The one thing I did love from the off was Goldsmith's score, which is incredible and I was crushed for many years without a CD of the score to play. Happily, Varese remedied that with their 30 minute tease and the full monty that followed.
So, basically, no...but yeah! smile

It's amazing this movie turned out to be as much fun as it is. It was one of the only movies being filmed during the writer's strike going on at the time so some (or perhaps much?) of it was ad libbed. If Marshall Harvey (CLaFong) sees this he can give better insight as this was one of his first editing jobs for Joe Dante.
