From the Kickstarter page:

George Oldziey is looking for game music fans from around the world to help fund an orchestral recording of music from Wing Commander.

Many of you know me, George Oldziey, as the composer for many historic video games, but probably most notably 3 games from the iconic Wing Commander series. I've been blessed to have very dedicated fans of my music for many years, and I would like to offer them the opportunity to participate in this historic endeavor.

The initial goal of $35,000 is to record a 9 1/2 minute suite of music from Wing Commander 3 and 4 featuring a full 80 piece orchestra and 40 voice choir. The recording will most likely be done in either Prague or Bratislava, both homes to amazing game and film scoring orchestras, some time during the summer of this year. We will also institute a series of stretch goals beyond the initial amount to hopefully record more of my Wing Commander music while we have the musicians at the ready. The video will give you more info about me and this project.

I will update everyone very frequently on the progress of this exciting adventure!

Wing Commander was a big deal back in the day. The music from the Wing Commander games are fantastic, especially the later one's such as The Price of Freedom. A worthy cause that may show Kickstarter as a viable avenue for re-recordings. For the money asking I would have liked if there was more music, however. $35,000 for just under 10 minutes seems like a lot.

$35,000 doesn't seem like that much, considering. There are 120 musicians who need to be paid. That alone would break down to only $292 per musician. But you also have the cost of using the recording studio, mixing, mastering, etc. Recording quality music ain't cheap. smile

Of course, a lot of KS projects only need the extra 'push' and it could very easily be that the $35k is more of the difference between having enough and not having enough.

I just threw some money at this and I'll likely do it again!

Maybe I've got something wrong, but 35K for nine minutes seems a bit pricey when James Fitzpatrick was quoting 40K for full scores.

$35000 would just be the initial investment. Sell 2000 CDs at $19.99 each and there's another $40000 to cover additional costs.

George miscredited me, actually. All I did was forward the art to him - it was actually done by our very own Mr Joffe. wink

Curious to hear this. I loved those games (esp. III and IV), and have strong nostalgic connection to the music as well. It always sounded like it 'wanted' to be orchestral anyway, so I'm curious to hear how it sounds with an ACTUAL orchestra.
