I believe on my computer I have this service but I don't really know the technical jargon on it.A friend of mine who does not have it, who is a litte coy with all these tech equipment's would like to know about it. He states on his computer screen every couple of days a message pops up stating he does not have it and all he has to do is push the installed button to get it. He wonders if that is all that will happen and it won't cause any trouble with his computer. Anyone on this board can answer that question? Thanks for your time.

a lot of sites use abobe flash plugins to run, so that is probably what you are talking about. However, there are lots of third party sources to download it, and a lot of them will add toolbars and other more vilanous things to your pc. I would recommend just getting it directly from the Abobe site to make sure you get a clean load.

I have been seeing these pop-up boxes in the last few weeks, too, but haven't clicked on one yet, although tempted.

My partner was searching around and found some evidence that at least some of these were
virus entry points and that everyone should beware of them even though they look, to the untrained eye, very legitimate.

As Ado suggests, it's probably a very good idea (as it usually is) to go directly to the official website and download the proper, non-dangerous-to-computer, version of any of these.

It's pretty much impossible to use the WWW without Adobe plug-ins installed. Most of The Web is built on the shaky foundation that is Flash, so I don't know how anyone can go more than three days without it.

In any case, you want to install Adobe Flash, Shockwave Player, AIR, and you may as well install the Reader as well.

Go to
http://www.adobe.com/downloads.html?promoid=JZEFW
all the links are in a box at the top right of the screen

You have the option of letting the programs update automatically or not. Set it how you like, but keep up on the updates as old versions of Flash are and entry point for hackers.

You should also have Java installed and keep it updated for all the same reasons.

My pc is constantly being slowed down accompanied by the following pop-up:

"Warning: unresponsive plugin.
Shockwave Flash may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the plugin now, or you can continue to see if the plugin will complete."

I currently have the Adobe Flash Player 12 plugin which I updated in February.

Any suggestions on how to solve the Shockwave problem?

Go to this address:

http://www.adobe.com/downloads.html?promoid=KAWQL

On the right hand side you will see DOWNLOADS in a gray black box. Hit each link that applies and let Adobe determine what versions you have installed. If a newer version is available, it will show a “Download now” instruction.

If everything is current but still not working, there may be corrupted files and you will probably have to uninstall Shockwave. After uninstalling and before re-installing, I recommend you use Disk Cleanup for a thorough clean and then disk defrag. (Sometimes doing just these two steps clears up a multitude of saggy delays and other irritates.) While you’re at it, clean up your brower(s) of unnecessary history, etc.

One more thing: You may need to turn off your anti-virus software or instruct it to accept Shockwave. If you have Webroot, which I do, that won’t be easy. I recently bought Serif WebPlus X7 and Webroot flatly refuses to allow installation. I have no solutions for anti-virus discipline problems. Perhaps others here do.

If you use Chrome it also has an error working with Shockwave, but they provide a resolution.
I love Chrome browser.

Thanks for mentioning Chrome. Maybe fisch uses it and his difficulties will be resolved.

RALPH:

Thanks for the link. Although I updated my Adobe in February, the new update seems to be working.
