I finally heard this early Scott score, thanks to someone uploading a copy of their old, great sounding LP. It's a rollicking listen, but reminds me more of something by John Addison or Ron Goodwin than owt by John Scott I've heard before. It's a bit too broad, disparate and comedic for me to thoroughly enjoy, but it was nice to hear Scott starting out. I can't say I crave a CD issue of it. I would much prefer The Long Duel or England Made Me first. Any fans of this one out there?
For years, decades, I assumed this was a Ron Goodwin score - mainly because of the catchy theme. VERY Ron. The movie was on TV the other day and I bothered to check the music credits because most of the rest of the score seemed oddly un-Goodwinesque. Very surprised it was a John Scott.
Mediocre movie, and, to be honest, the score just about does its duty (it misses quite a few comedic moments that Goodwin would have totally nailed). But the theme is lovely.
I think that I read in another thread that Bruce Kimmel would love to re-issue ROCKET TO THE MOON onto CD.
The 1967 Polydor LP is one of the rarest soundtrack vinyls and is one of the few English-language releases to be included amongst listings of ultra-rare pressings (which are typically Italian)

Another great composer still going strong into his 80's. It's just a pity his great talent is being under utilised these days. Still, at least there are many unreleased scores by him that we have to look forward to hearing.
Finally got the Kritzerland CD of this (despite my comments at the start of the thread). It's a real 'pompous git' of a score (I mean that in a good way). Lots of 'by george' and 'what ho' to the music (yes, I know I'm babbling, but I KNOW what I mean) It's SO assured when considering it was one of Scott's early scores. It really showcases that he was cut-out to write film scores. I remember reading people saying James Horner came into film scoring as the 'completed article' and hearing the early scores of JS makes me think likewise of him. Anyway, the Kritzerdisc sounds great and features lots of variety within the score. I don't know how it's selling (probably bad!!) but if we want more Scott scores released, we need to grab things like this first!
According to Bruce's comments posted on this board, it didn't sell well at all. That was very unfortunate because John Scott is a very gifted composer and I was hoping for Kritzerland to get around to releasing more of his scores; especially THE LONG DUEL which came out on LP decades ago.

The Long Duel is on our Rhino list - it's complicated by something or other, can't remember what, but I'll do it if they can ultimately clear it.
