Best acceptance speech: Matthew McConaughey

Second best acceptance speech: Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, composers of "Let It Go"

My favorite was Jarod Leto's.

I really liked Ellen as the host. She showed you didn't have to be gross to be funny. Her only off- color remark was the one she made to Jonah Hill about what he showed in Wolf Of Wall Street, and I thought it was funny. I loved the way she pulled the actors in the audience into her jokes. The pizza guy had no idea he would be marched on to the stage, and he earned a $600.00 tip from the actors. I found her delightful throughout the show.

I loved the homage to The Wizard Of Oz. Just think that there was no CGI in 1939 and yet the film still looks so modern. I also didn't know that Pink had such a powerful voice.

I feel sorry for all the ugly comments in the Internet about Kim Novak. I had a hard time hearing her voice; it was almost like she had vocal cord problems. Still, I like it when some of the older generations show up as presenters.

Loved all the film scores that were played. Some were very modern like Desplat's theme from Argo. Some were from the Golden Age like Love Is A Many Splendored Thing. I relished hearing so many movie scores.

Kim Novak - once and always a stunning woman.
Once I saw her in Vertigo, wow. Truly beautiful.
I agree - the comments against her were tacky.

Well, Novak certainly struggles from too many plastic surgeries (that's Hollywood for ya!) and she seemed a bit confused on stage. But it was nice to see her in the limelight again. I think Matthew McConaughey did his best to guide her through the introductions.

I think the orchestra was playing Vertigo when Novak walked on stage. Yes, McConaughey was trying to guide her in a kind and respectful manner.

I didn't watch the Oscars (or any awards show for that matter), but Travolta's neurotic attachment to fake hair is way beyond creepy now.

John, you're a good guy. We like you. Just stop. It'll be okay.

PS. Listen how he says "wi-kid-ly". Do you know how drunk you have to be to do that?
LOL

Thought this was cute . . .

Now you can use an online "name generator" to see how Travolta would mispronounce YOUR name.

Nice moment : Pink singing Somewhere Over The Rainbow

My favorite musical performance of the evening.

Then she, in turn, butchered the song. Seriously, it astonishes me that this pitch resistant "vocalist" has a Tony. Unlistenable.

I accept that Idina Menzel (or Adele Dazeem according to John Travolta - god they let this guy fly planes!!) but saying she is unlistenable is really a bit bonkers.

Very talented singer. I think she has a great voice.

When Sandra Bullock arrived wearing that beautiful dress. I've never seen her look better.

Try not to feel bad for her not winning the Oscar. I've read she's pocketing close to 70 million dollars for her role in Gravity. Wooh!

A few things:

- I don't know if it was the material or if Ellen's been away from stand-up for too long, but there were very few laughs in her hosting job. It almost made me long for Seth MacFarlane. Almost.

- Kim Novak's credibility jumped the shark two years ago when she, in reacting to 'Scene d'Amour' being used in THE ARTIST, felt like she was 'being raped'. If she had done naked cartwheels at the ceremony, it wouldn't have mattered to me.

- Really nice acceptance speeches, esp. from Nyong'o, Leto (who'd have thought he'd beat Claire Danes to the Oscar?) and the Lopezes.

- Does anyone know what movie Jim Carrey referenced in his bit about Bruce Dern?

- Am I the only one who thinks that Kevin Spacey ought to be considered as a future Oscar host?

- I couldn't help but think of TOOTSIE when the whole pizza bit went on ("I'm sorry. Are these Oscars interfering with your pizza party?").

When I saw it, I was thinking maybe he was doing Dern as the bad guy in THE COWBOYS yelling back at John Wayne before he shot him so cowardly. If not that, it was probably from another western maybe.

First, I had absolutely no problem with Ellen as Oscar host -- the lack of pretension was very welcome, very refreshing, and I thought what she said about Minnelli was hysterical (gave me one of the best laughs of the night).

I liked the way they SANG their acceptance when "20 Feet From Stardom" won best documentary. Ooops ... maybe it was another musical team that sang their acceptance. Help me out, folks.

And to SBD, re: Leto (who'd have thought he'd beat Claire Danes to the Oscar?)

Remember when both Billy Crudup and Jared Leto starred in movies about the great but short-lived runner Steve Prefontein? As for Danes, at the time Crudup was a rising star and critics tripped over themselves gushing about HIS movie and ripping Leto's apart, when Crudup and Daines made the terrific "Stage Beauty," they dated for a time. As for Crudup vs Leto, wonder who's laughing now?

. . . IIRC, Crudup was the principled young actor who turned down "Titanic." Any regrets, I wonder?

Someone at another site thought they recognized it from "Hang 'Em High." --Total hearsay, I'm afraid, I couldn't find a corroborating clip.

Well, Leto is probably enjoying the last laugh, but Crudup was a better Prefontaine, and Without Limits a (much) better movie.

As for the Oscars, I liked the "Happy" song best, along with any and all references to Jerry's wonderful "Fanfare" (the more, the merrier--like a lot of Jerry's music, it gets better and better with the passing of time, and makes more and more sense).

Dan
