Momentum RLP is proud to present its first ever official soundtrack release: William Ross’ original soundtrack for Jim Wilson’s “50 to 1.”

A prolific award-winning composer and arranger whose work has spanned feature films, the recording industry and television, William has composed music for such films as The Tale of Despereaux, A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, Touchback, Ladder 49, Tuck Everlasting, and My Dog Skip. He also adapted and conducted the score to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The score for “50 to 1” is his latest project, and he couldn’t be more excited to share it with the world!

“50 to 1” is the upcoming biopic based on the true story of the crooked-footed racehorse named Mine that Bird. A group of misfit New Mexico cowboys and their horse endure mishaps and obstacles on their journey to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby 2009, and find themselves as the ultimate underdogs with 50 to 1 odds in the world’s most elite race.
’50 to 1’ director Jim Wilson said, “The original soundtrack for ’50 to 1’ encompasses all the I had imagined; capturing the sparse but beautiful New Mexico landscapes and the thrill of the Kentucky Derby. The actual recordings are second to none, the sound is flawless. William Ross once again has proven to be among the finest composers alive.”

From the liner notes: “The score begins in New Mexico with sunny acoustic guitar arpeggios rambling under a bluesy harmonica. (...) From the rock-infused electric guitar wailings in “Riding to the Ranch,” to the upbeat slide guitar and fiddle duet that accompanies “Meeting Bird” and the Americana do-si-do as “Bird Plays,” Ross follows the central characters with this down-home flavor all the way to the big race. For “The Breeder’s Cup” and “The Kentucky Derby,” Ross wrote rousing marches to underscore the tradition of the races with noble French horn melodies over a cantering string ostinato. The epic “Final Race & Epilogue” tells the film’s central drama through music, beginning with the nervous heartbeat of Mind That Bird’s ten-length disadvantage, through the explosive charge that blasted the horse past the pack and won him roses. (...) Ross combines the orchestra, recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London, with a variety of folk instruments recorded in his Santa Monica studio. (...) It is a unique blend of Western-Americana and symphonic music that charts new territory for the composer, while still calling on his knack for the big emotional moments.”

I love William Ross. But: Is a CD release planned. That would be really appreciated. I loved that Varese seemed to release more scores of his in the last few years.
