I did a similar thread on Jack Nicholson awhile back, asking if he's ever appeared on any talk show. Doesn't seem that way. He hardly even gives interviews.

Anyways, Ian Holm is another of my favourite actors, but I'm struggling to find any interviews with him on Youtube. Maybe there are some on the LORD OF THE RINGS set (haven't played it in a while).

Can you help?

Just had a look and I couldn't find anything. Now you mention it I can't ever remember seeing Ian Holm interviewed?

He's a wonderful actor, but I don't recall seeing anything much.

Maybe they just don't ask him.

But he's of a generation: he worked with Pinter etc. and came out of the new wave after Osborne etc.. He would have immensely articulated insights if he'd loose them, but I'd take him for one of those guys who'd let the work speak for itself. I'd take him to be modest too, and humorous.

WILLIAMDMCCRUM:

I've followed his career for years -- he was excellent in the American Film Theatre version of Pinter's "Homecoming" and I was hoping he would win the Oscar for his role as the running coach in "Chariots Of Fire" -- he was soooooooooooo good in that! But most of us here, of course, remember him in Ridley Scott's original "Alien." Very busy actor, but it doesn't look like he cares to wade in the Hollywood publicity bullshit.

Yeah, I have a feeling it's not only a question of not being asked; but also that he -- like Nicholson -- doesn't like to do interviews and talkshows. What I wouldn't give to hear either of those gentlemen in an episode of THE ACTOR'S STUDIO, despite the unnecessary gushing that show contains at times.

For today's generation, he's mostly associated with older Bilbo. For my generation, it was ALIEN that hooked us (at least me) to his talents. But he's done so much more brilliant stuff on stage and screen.

I remember seeing a behind-the-scenes of THE FIFTH ELEMENT, where Besson said he could do multiple takes with Holm and he would do them all differently and equally well, creating a luxury problem in regards to which take to use.

Btw, in addition to Timmer's brief 1-minute segment above, I found another 1-minute segment on RATATOUILLE here:

http://www.movieweb.com/movie/ratatouille/ian-holm-interview

Only TWO minutes of Holm interviews on the entire interwebz. What a disgrace!

In answer to the question: I'm fairly certain I recall him appearing on one or more UK chat shows, probably back in the 1970s/80s - my guess would be a spot on the Michael Parkinson show (however the list showing on IMDb does not mention him - albeit it does mention Jack Nicholson! - see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkinson_(TV_series))

Ian Holm has been an actor I've enjoyed in a number of roles over a great many years, though I wouldn't give tuppence for his mainstream films such as Alien and LOTR ....

I first noticed him, i.e. learnt his name, watching a TV series in the early 1970s: The Man from Haven in which he played a character who had access to some Swiss Bank Accounts, each week a different target (I think ... ) - the show had a marvellous theme by Christopher Gunning - note that the details on IMDb are inaccurate/lacking.

And from there, I spotted him in many support roles such as Mary, Queen of Scots, Shout at the Devil, Robin and Marian, Juggernaut ... always very good, always in command of the material.

But it was some years later when I watched the 13 part TV series Game, Set and Match in which he was the lead that he impressed me most. I almost didn't bother watching part 2 but decided to give it a try ... and was hooked!

Back to the question: he clearly is a private man who has shunned the spotlight ... if only a number of other stars were so considerate!

Like MusicMad my search included Michael Parkinson. I also tried Russell Harty, Terry Wogan, Barry Norman and Jonathan Ross. All to no avail.

Whoa! I've been looking for that all my adult life! Now the question is -- how do I find that Parkinson episode?

Too bad Holm doesn't feature there also. Of my Top 5 favourite actors (Nicholson, Hopkins, Holm, Oldman and Goldblum), only Goldblum seems to be appearing on talk shows regularly. Maybe some of their brilliance is due to their personal privacy.

I'm a bit surprised at your top five, not for matters of their ability, but rather because you often show disdain for "Hollywood" cinema (or more for the dominance it has on this board). Not to take this too far OT, but which performers fill out the bottom five of your favorites?

Ah, then you've misunderstood me. I absolutely LOVE Hollywood cinema. That's how I got interested in films, and it's still part of my 'film being'. However, in addition to that I've grown increasingly interested in non-Hollywood outings over the years too, so now I like both, and I guess I sometimes get frustrated because this board is skewed too much towards the former. Variety is the spice of life!

My bottom actors is difficult -- probably just usual suspects like Adam Sandler, Keanu Reeves, Ben Affleck and others who haven't impressed me in scope nor depth over the years.
