Do you have any pet peeves regarding how commercial television programs are presented on home video? The one that bothers me are the obvious fade outs or abrupt cuts which lead into commercials. Sometimes when a show comes back from a commercial break, they repeat the last few seconds of the program before the break as a reminder where we left off.

I know it's asking to much, but it would be nice if the production companies would re-edit commercial oriented programs on home video where there are no breaks at all. Since none is needed. (Oh how I love Doctor Who on home video!)

I also don't need to hear the theme song every single time I start a new episode. When it comes to something like "Enterprise" hearing that opening theme once, is one time to many! I would prefer the theme song plays once when you start the first episode and then segway into the other episodes without repeating the opening theme. (Maybe there's a contractual reason they have to show the opening credits every time?)

If they are going to give us the programs "as they aired", then how about including those cool intro and exit "bumpers" as well? Though I don't think they've done bumpers since the 70's.

I know that Lucasfilm did this with their TV shows (the Ewoks/Droids cartoons, I believe also Young Indiana Jones) and it caused a minor uproar that the shows had been altered from their air version.

A lot of times, it could be more than a case of minor edits, and involve either more expensive work or questionable creative decisions (for one instance, how to make the music flow in a scene that has one cue end at a commercial break and another cue start after the break - besides rescoring the thing).

Most fans would absolutely lynch you if you got your way! In this case, purists like me absolutely prefer the quick fadeouts/ins between commercial breaks and we definitely insist on hearing the opening theme every time! In fact, some shows like X-FILES, STAR TREK, and BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER have screwed-up title sequences on DVD - that is, they've sometimes either on purpose or by accident forgotten to put a slightly altered opening on an episode that had one, instead copying the same one onto the wrong episodes.

Just use your fast-forward while the rest of us enjoy "Faith Of The Heart" in all its cheesy glory. smile

@ mstrox- Interesting I didn't know about those re-edits. I figured someone at least one time tried this approach! I'm sure it's more a cost factor. Just burn what ever current elements they have on disc and get it out to the waiting public.

@ A Genuis- Haha! I am sure you are right. I'm speaking sacrilege here I know. Actually for the most part I am a purist. Don't like most "Director Cuts". But for myself when you watch a couple of episodes of a series in a row like we can nowadays I just don't need to see the opening theme over and over again. Actually I think of my King of Queens set if you choose "Play All" it only plays the opening theme once. But what bugs me most of all are the awkward transitions to and from commercials which are not there. I suppose I should be counting my lucky stars the home video market doesn't contain those commercials!

They did indeed do it with Young Indy (editorially "smooth out" the commercial breaks), and there is indeed controversy over the current presentation, but none of the fan criticism that I've seen has been about that specific aspect. Rather, the entire series was pretty drastically overhauled with new editing, effects, audio, etc., to an extent that makes all the tinkering done with the original Star Wars trilogy and THX 1138 look like minor scratch and dirt removal by comparison - even the very title of the whole overall series has been changed, from The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles to The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones. As you might expect, some of the changes are actually pretty good, and arguably greatly improve things as long as one doesn't object to the very idea of deviations from the original early '90s broadcasts on purist principles (which is an entirely fair position, of course, though not mine, even if I'd like to have perfect copies of them if just for reference purposes)... while other changes are generally regarded pretty much the way most of us regard Greedo shooting first.

But the smoothing over of the commercial breaks? That's terrific, and works really well, IMO.

What a terrible idea!

The opening title sequence and music sets the mood of the show. If you're getting fed up of it you must be binge-watching too many episodes at once.

\I also don't need to hear the theme song every single time I start a new episode.

It is a minor annoyance when they don't have a chapter break immediately after the opening credit sequence.

That is a terrible, terrible, terrible, TERRIBLE idea. If that ever catches on, I will hunt you down and punch you. Repeatedly.

EDIT: Also, you would never get away with this for any QM shows.

The damn Tales From the Crypt DVDs omit the opening sequence from the episodes, instead having it play as an intro to the DVD. It wouldn't be so bad if it weren't partially obscured by an over-sized button for skipping said intro. What a terrible way to treat one of the coolest openings ever.

I actually would prefer they remaster their prints for 16x9 televisions, like they did with THE DUKES OF HAZZARD, which looks great.

I wish the home video presentations of the original Star Trek would be in production order, or some other order that makes more sense than airdate order.

What was the mentality behind jumbling up the order in which they aired anyway?

When Columbia House sold the VHS tapes through mail-order subscription they were placed in order of Stardate, 2 episodes per tape. It made perfect sense to me.
Beautiful presentation and packaging for those tapes. Excellent quality.

____________________________________________

I'm not sure of the release date, but the first VHS release of Fawlty Towers was unique in that each tape had 3 or 4 episodes per, all running together as one long show. At the end, the credits for all the preceding shows ran as one long end credit sequence.

I know you're talking about commercial tv programs, but I just wanted to point out that when HBO started bringing out each season of "Sex And The City," you had to sit through the opening theme each time, and it wasn't set up to, if you moved to the next track, to just skip over the opening credits, and I even wrote HBO a letter about it, but, season after season, they were all the same. (I compared it to the Chinese water torture!) After the 4th (or 5th) season, I stopped buying them. Other cable companies were a lot more user friendly, especially Showtime, and it was very easy to skip past the opening credits for all seasons of "Dexter."

Well, how long were the credits?

Not sure but I think it had to do with what was "ready to air" kinda thing. Obviously this show had a fair amount of post production per episode. Some more than others. So episode 10 might have been ready for broadcast before episode 7.
