I know that Lucasfilm did this with their TV shows (the Ewoks/Droids cartoons, I believe also Young Indiana Jones) and it caused a minor uproar that the shows had been altered from their air version.
They did indeed do it with Young Indy (editorially "smooth out" the commercial breaks), and there is indeed controversy over the current presentation, but none of the fan criticism that I've seen has been about that specific aspect. Rather, the entire series was pretty drastically overhauled with new editing, effects, audio, etc., to an extent that makes all the tinkering done with the original Star Wars trilogy and THX 1138 look like minor scratch and dirt removal by comparison - even the very title of the whole overall series has been changed, from The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles to The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones. As you might expect, some of the changes are actually pretty good, and arguably greatly improve things as long as one doesn't object to the very idea of deviations from the original early '90s broadcasts on purist principles (which is an entirely fair position, of course, though not mine, even if I'd like to have perfect copies of them if just for reference purposes)... while other changes are generally regarded pretty much the way most of us regard Greedo shooting first.
But the smoothing over of the commercial breaks? That's terrific, and works really well, IMO.

I actually would prefer they remaster their prints for 16x9 televisions, like they did with THE DUKES OF HAZZARD, which looks great.

I know you're talking about commercial tv programs, but I just wanted to point out that when HBO started bringing out each season of "Sex And The City," you had to sit through the opening theme each time, and it wasn't set up to, if you moved to the next track, to just skip over the opening credits, and I even wrote HBO a letter about it, but, season after season, they were all the same. (I compared it to the Chinese water torture!) After the 4th (or 5th) season, I stopped buying them. Other cable companies were a lot more user friendly, especially Showtime, and it was very easy to skip past the opening credits for all seasons of "Dexter."
