Goldsmith was a master at his craft and oh how he could fill up about 40 seconds with sheer brillance. Here is a cue which plays under a montage of a typical busy day for Douglas Dillman (James Earl Jones), the first U.S. Black President in the TV-Movie with Rod Serling's screenplay from the Irving Wallace novel, THE MAN. This score would be a joy to have!
And watch and listen to Goldsmith's music in the film. Great Main Title Theme and score! Superb Main Title starts at 6:50 after a somewhat pre-title sequence.
At 20:05 a quite powerful cue underscoring President Dillman's visit to the Lincoln Memorial.
Very passionate, thoughtful cue at 23:18 underscoring the New President's first moments in the oval office alone.
Does anyone know for sure if anything on this score exists in the vaults anywhere? Produced by ABC Circle Films - Lorimar and distributed by Paramount.
Just watched this little movie on YouTube. Thanks v much for posting this. If this was released I would definitely buy a copy. A beautiful score with pathos and pastoral/heroic Americana shot through with harmonies which could be from negro spirituals. It is testament to Goldsmith the magician. Goldsmith was the chameleon who was able to uniquely inhabit the emotional sense of each feature he scored whether for TV or the silver screen. What's more tantalising are moments when cues from this short score have been dialled out suggesting there may be extra bars or cues written but cut from the movie. Funny to think that the tapes for "The Man" are probably gathering dust somewhere in an obscure vault after over four decades. What a gift the studios gave us by hangng on too these otherwise useless session tapes! (Am currently listening to the Varese complete release of Escape from the Planet of the Apes but I digress) Please someone have the fortitude to seek out those artefacts from "The Man" and organise a release of this lovely little score.
This is a favorite of several guys running soundtrack labels---and its not like they haven't looked---but Lorimar, like many independent production houses, had no "library" or "archive" to turn over when they were acquired by larger entities. So its gonna take a minor miracle.

Could that minor miracle possibly have the name TADLOW and a certain Maestro Raine and orchestra attached? At least for a rerecord, if it comes to pass that the Masters are indeed lost or thrown out?
I worked at both Lorimar and Warner Bros. in the late 80's and early 90's and Warner's back then gobbled up all the Lorimar titles at least for International Television Distribution and I'm sure Domestic as well.
This is one of the last of the untapped major Goldsmith scores of his prime period. If tapes don't exist, what is the likelihood that score sheets are still around? Since there is as of yet no Goldsmith archive collection to draw from to see what does exist, I guess the only person who might be able to answer that question would be Carol Goldsmith. Even a few years ago you could not find this film anywhere except on old VHS transfer copies of varying quality culled off various local station tv broadcasts from decades ago. Younger fans never even heard it. It was out of sight out of mind. Now in it's various incarnations up on YouTube (When it's not being pulled down and put back up) both the film and it's music have been getting the wide exposure they haven't had in 40 years. My recent hope has been that if the tapes are indeed lost perhaps we could at least get a reconstruction by Tadlow on one of their forthcoming Goldsmith re-recording projects. I appreciate Joe S. coming on here to mention that it's been on the radar with several people at the labels.
