Do you like playing just whatever you are in the mood for? Or do you decide at the beginning of the day that "Today is for westerns only." or Today is all Horner, all day."?

Is there any pattern to what you choose?

Usually what I'm in the mood for. Sometimes themes, but I don't persist if I get bored or change my mind. Sometimes I make a point to throw the player on shuffle -- by album, not song -- to refresh my memory of things that I might have forgotten how much I enjoy.

Mood. Today I played The Enforcer, Wyatt Earp and a Star Trek TV score. No rhyme or reason to it.

I thought about having "composer days" or "genre days" but that never seems to work. I just randomly scan my playlist until something peeks my interest. Other times score discussions will put me in the mood for a particular soundtrack. Recently Ive been playing "Field of Dreams" because someone brought it up. I do tend to play quieter music early in the morning, and work up to more bombastic stuff in the afternoon.

I check the Now Playing thread first, to get listening ideas.

Generally by mood or holiday season, but new arrivals are usually first priority.

Pretty sure we've had this thread before...

I for one have a list of all my discs and use Random.org to create a list of what to listen to.

Of course, this is fully irrelevant to the scheduale for new arrivals which I listen to once when they come, then two weeks later, then at the beginning of the month after (6-10 weeks after they arrive in other words). Only after that third listen do they go into the above random rotation.

....

Similarly, I'm now creating a list of played albums - geek-mode super-plus smile - largely because my expansion of classical works, often with multiple versions, left me wondering what it was I had played last time, etc. I simply extended the idea to other, non-classical, works.

And the knock-on effect has been, if not force me to choose previously unplayed/not-listed albums, then at least to take this into consideration.

I will choose by scrolling through albums or artists, reading about a score on this forum, a sudden brain-wave ... anything else. But my listing has no doubt pushed me to play many a score I've neglected ... e.g. I've played more Jerry Goldsmith this year than the whole of last year.

Often my wife will choose and queue-up three or four albums from the collection (usually mixing film scores with classical works, rarely easy-listening/vocal albums) leaving me to identify the works. This morning, after I had chosen Love Field, she sequenced up Alfred Newman's Wuthering Heights (Bernstein) ... I struggled for a while as I couldn't get Max Steiner's name out of my head (and yet for some reason I kept thinking of Elmer Bernstein, too) ...

... followed by Boris Tishchenko's Symphony No.7 (Yablonsky) ... I needed a couple of clues! ...

... and now Carlo Rustichelli's Amici Miei ... which I identified with the first or second note! smile

I wonder what's next ... *

Oh, how I enjoy my music! smile

Edit: * it's a cello piece ... I'm really going to struggle identifying this one!

Mood. I tried the generate random method but then I always land on a title I'm not in the mood for and just end up playing what I want to hear.

First of all. I listen my newly arrived CDs carefully. wink
After that all happens really accidentally.
It's often happens with me that I wake up and one tune begin "playing" in my head. So when I go for my work, I'll listen that score.
Sometimes I listen music as some kind of marathons - I listen only Barry's scores, or whole Blue Box etc...

But two weeks ago I started another kind of marathon - I listen all scores from my iPod in alphabetical order. So at one day I can listen really unusual combinations - this Friday it was bank Shot & Barbarian & the Geisha, for example.
Tomorrow I'll start LONG Batman "series" - Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman: TAS Vol. 1& 2, Batman: TBATB, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm... This will be cool!!! big grin
