I grew up on the late 60's and 70's watching Harryhausen movies. (No Disney movies for me.) Saw VALLEY OF GWANGI in '69 when I was around 5 years old, and was immediately hooked. Then saw the SINBADS in the 70s, CLASH OF THE TITANS in '81 and, of course, the rest on TV. He made my childhood. I met him once, at a Starlog convention in NYC in 1987, and had a very brief conversation with him. He was very kind, and a true gentleman. Reminded me of my father or my grandfather. I will never forget him. A true talent, artist and inspiration.

Ray was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word...not to mention a cherished friend of nearly fifty years duration. I hope that this loving remembrance of a magical soul and creative artist made you smile.

I too grew up loving Ray's films. Believe it or not it's not actually that long since I managed to catch up with his black and white period, all but Mighty Joe Young were never shown on the tv stations I could get, but before the age of home video 7th Voyage and Jason in particular were often revived in my local cinema. I was old enough to see One Million Years BC onwards at the cinema on release. My first hard back book purchase was his Film Fantasy Scrapbook, after my dad (who also bore a resemblance to Ray) got fed up of constantly reordering it from my local library. He said it spent more time on our shelf than theirs!

My first soundtrack album was Golden Voyage of Sinbad, and it was those double bills of 7th Voyage and Jason that started my film music love ball rolling. And here I am still at it all these years later.

It was our privilege in the UK to have him as a resident here, and all the more so to attend one of those events decribed in your piece, Steve. Ours was at the Pomegranate Theatre, Chesterfield. Many people have movie idols, usually stars, but very rarely do they get to meet them. Well, mine was happy to chat and socialise a little with me, and he was almost insistent that we pick up and handle his stop motion models. The thrill of actually handling these legendary screen monsters was unforgettable.

When I asked him to sign that long treasured book and the then recently released Intrada Jason and the Argonauts rerecording he was most impressed, so far unaware of the latter.

A nice remembrance that parallels my own experience with the Master's ouevre. I spoke with him when he came to a weekend celebration/festival in his honor in Boulder CO circa 1998-9. A true gentleman. I treasure my autographed JASON laserdisc.... :-)

It's delightful to hear such lovely remembrances of such a wonderful soul. Ray was among the first of his kind, a genuine visionary and pioneer. Without his genius and dedication to his craft, along with HIS personal teacher and mentor, the late Willis O'Brien, virtually none of the recent fantasy/sci-fi spectacles could ever have existed. My personal remembrance of Ray honors not only our wonderful friendship of nearly fifty years, but his incomparable contribution to the world of visual cinema, as well as the artistry that his work continues to inspire today, and for years to come. I hope that you'll find my Rondo nominated tribute to his memory of value and, should you care to express your approval by voting, simply send your vote and your name to ... taraco@aol.com ... in order to officially register. Once again, here is the link to this loving, and deeply personal remembrance of a most charming soul.

Here is a wonderful video salute to the legendary Ray Harryhausen, created by motion picture writer/director Craig Jamison.

Please forgive the lavish praise of an admitted friend and cinematic biographer, but I was deeply touched by his most gracious and loving promotional film.
