I found this little presentation which sums up the genesis of the encounter between Patrice Leconte and Gabriel Yared

"A Promise had a series of parameters that were new to me; they were a long series of 'firsts': it was shot in English, it was adapted from a Stefan Zweig novel, and its dramatic setting was the Great War." Filmmaker Patrice Leconte was summing up the unusual place occupied by his 28th full-length feature film A Promise. Another "first" to add to the list: the film A Promise also marks his incandescent encounter with composer Gabriel Yared, the great alchemist of lyricism. "I love the way his writing translates the complexity there is in movements of the heart; his music has propriety and restraint," comments Leconte. Their association — a state of grace — produced a vast score for chamber orchestra that is at once delicate and intense, and it functions like the characters' inner voices in that the score reveals sentiments which the characters dare not express… Listening to this highly original soundtrack confirms the obvious: A Promise is no conclusion but a point of departure, a beginning for two creative brothers who are bound to continue. And the music, following after The Moon in the Gutter, The English Patient or The Talented Mr Ripley, is destined to become a Gabriel Yared classic.

hmm... sounds promissing and that cover is just beautiful!
OK... I am in smile)

With several Yared scores released over the last month or so it would be nice if someone decided to start similar rescue mission for Kaczmarek's recent unreleased scores...

The samples do sound nice, but total length time only 35 minutes is a disappointment.

You shouldn't judge a score by its length; many of the great film scores out there only average 30 minutes.

Also I would much rather have a perfect score at 35 minutes than a forgettable hour + score full of filler.

I agree with that mostly. Taken at face value, 35 minutes is short for a release. But as you say, it could be 35 mins of quality as opposed to a longer running time of filler. However, as a rule, I generally like my releases to be in the 45-55 min bracket. I just think that’s good value. Anything around the 30 min mark I feel is too short, whereas over the hour mark I feel is too long. But that’s just my personal preference, of course.

You can't judge any artistic works on its length.
For instance, one of my favourite OST is "Jo" (with Louis de Funès, music composed by Raymond Lefèvre) and it "only" lasts about 15/20 mn, but still one of the greatest OST (from my point of view...) !

I've just downloaded and took the time (35 minutes) to listen to it… Such a great work by Yared. This is now my favourite Yared's OST (just in front of The English Patient).

Just one last thing to say : hope the movie will be as good as the OST promises it smile !!

Total is $26 so not much of a difference. I think I'm leaning towards the lossless download at Qobuz for $11 but I really want the CD.

Buying it new to North America from a commercial amazon.fr marketplace seller also comes to $25-26.

But doing it that way for anyone in the UK or mainland Europe, the cost is just £11. Mine's en route.
