Frankly, it's not that much different and anyone who has the old edition should be fine.
Being something of an obsessive with both film and score I had to have this encore version in order to hear the alternate Main Title and I have to disagree with Bruce Kimmel's comment above when he says it’s not much different to the version as in the film. I’ve heard plenty of alternative cues where I’ve had a hard time spotting any change at all – but I'm pleased to say that's not so in this case.
Although the thematic material is the same, the arrangements and orchestration are very different, giving a more subdued, romantic sounding Main Title. Assuming this was Friedhofer’s first version, it’s not surprising that he decided (or more probably asked, in view of all the changes made to film and score) to make it sound harsher to suit the revenge theme. The cue also extends from the title sequence into the opening scene of the bank hold-up, where Brando is nonchalantly sitting on the counter eating a banana, and ends on an ominous downward chord. That music is in the film but isn’t included on disc 2 as part of the OST. So it's good to have that music - albeit brief - as well. The complete cue is therefore 25 seconds longer than the Main Title as heard on track 1 of both disc 1 and disc 2.
I came to a similar conclusion. The first issue was excellent, however the "encore" is much better. Although most listeners can be pleased with the first issue, I am much happier with the second. So I sold off my first copy and basically swapped it for the second. The correct replacement cue, as noted above, is actually a bit longer and includes a small amount of music not included on the 2nd disc.

How can one tell which one is which? I placed an order at MovieMusic assuming that I was ordering the Encore Edition. Looking at the page, however, it does not say "Encore Edition". Given that the original release sold out I would think I'd almost certainly be getting the Encore. Just to be sure though, I sent an email to Peter Kelly. I assumed he'd confirm it was the Encore by looking at the packaging where it would say "Encore Edition". Apparently it doesn't, because he got back to me and asked me the same question I'm asking here... how do you tell which one you've got?
You could, of course, just order it from Kritzerland and be sure you're getting the Encore edition.

I bought the first release, a huge favourite, I still listen to it a lot. This, Goldsmiths Rio Conchos & L. Newman's The Last Wagon are my three favourite non-spaghetti western CD's. If you like Friedhofers music, then this is a must-have. Maybe one day a great looking Blu-ray?
Still holding out a very slim hope for another Freidhofer western, White Feather.
Ah, in my past life as CinemaScope, & we got a great looking Blu-ray (I bought the UK Arrow release), sometimes great things do happen. I thought the Encore edition had sold out yonks ago, esp. with the release of the Criterion Blu-ray. I've taken Doug Raynes advice & just now have ordered the encore before it goes forever. One of the all time great soundtracks

ONE EYED JACKS & THE COUNTERFEIT TRATIOR are my 2 favorite Kritzerland CD's ! Get them while they are still available.

While comparing the Kritzerland 2-CD release to the film, I noticed that there were two cues that presented a puzzlement. The "Adios, Friend" on the disc is not the same as in the film which recycles part of the opening cue, at the end of the credits and into the bank. Was this a r4esult of another mislabeled tape or is there some other explanation?
Second, the cue "To Point of the Devil / Gentle Visitor" on the LP release is not heard at all in the film. Is this an alternate cue or outtake?

You know, in film, music editors frequently do other things, like patch together stuff, so yes, things can sometimes be different. There was NOTHING missing from the tapes at all.
