I thought there was a thread about this score already, but couldn't find one in the search.
It's just gorgeous.
Have strings ever sound so deep and soulful and huge than the way this fella employs them (it's like Thomas Newman x 10).
The CD does have a slight RUDY-like A theme B theme flow to it, between the classical styled cues and the warm, beautiful string-dominated tracks.
I quite like the film too. It's a classy, warm, 'perfect for a Sunday afternoon' drama about a prickly old President's wife and her put-upon bodyguard.
He doesn't get much discussion around here, apart from a few loyal followers of his who carry the torch.
There are a few Disney scores he did that I dream of being released on CD (the stunning ASPEN EXTREME and JUNGLE 2 JUNGLE). I'd love Intrada to give them a listen and hear my plea smile

Agree on all points, Kev! Guarding Tess is a great score!! And if you haven't sought out Wrestling Ernest Hemingway, do yourself a favor and get it immediately. Another lush score that'll bring a tear to your eye...

P.S. Check your Intrada PMs.

A very nice score which impressed me when I saw the film at the WORLDWIDE THEATRE IN NEW YORK in 1994.oh those days, after work going into that dollar or two theatre seeing interesting films after their first run engagements. I remember for a while they offered unlimited popcorn after your first buy.It was I believe the last one dollar theatre New York ever had.Closed shortly after the turn of the century.

Wrestling Ernest Hemingway is absolutely sublime, and I've likely said so in every Convertino thread out there! He's a true master at writing for strings - another score I heartily recommend is Mother Night released on Varese, gorgeous stuff.

Thanks Doug, e-mail sent smile

I have the WEH score, it is quite lovely. Soothing, serene, tranquil.
The music takes you to places we all want to be.
I quite like Mother Night, but not as much.
A lot of it is existing music and Convertino, when not re-orchestrating the Part piece, is writing music in a similar vein. It's okay, but not a favourite of mine.
Shame he's hung up his boots, but what chance would he have in today's film scoring bear-pit!

I liked the music in this film, and I want to add that I really enjoy this movie. It is a sweet, sentimental movie. I like watching the personal growth of the two lead characters. I have always found it heart-felt and charming, and the music enhances the whole viewing experience.

Kev, I was so thrilled to see this thread. This is a beautiful score and a beautiful movie. I am a longtime Shirley McClain fan - any role she plays pleases me. Further, this is my favorite Nicholas Cage movie - he played it perfectly. The score so aptly carried the mood of the movie throughout.

This score has an even more special meaning for me as well. It is the first score my husband purchased for me without my having to write down all the details. He knew how I felt about the movie, located it and presented to me for Christmas some years back. What a guy. He doesn't share my hobby but fully supports my "avid" participation in it. What more can I ask for?

Thanks for creating this thread - it made my day Kev!

Convertino is in my top two or three favourite film composers... I'm amazed he doesn't have a bigger following or more CD releases. Guarding Tess is indeed another gem of his.

There was part one of a really good Convertino podcast a few years back and a review website, but they both stopped at the same time. As for MC himself, who knows?!?

Jungle 2 Jungle is available as part of a promo, as is the incredible We Don't Live Here Anymore.

You can blame me for not having completed parts 2 and 3 of my Convertino program for Cinematic Sound. I still intend to get them done, though, once I can find the time again. Life has a knack for getting in the way!! frown

Love this score. It's a good film with amazing music.

The score adds so much to the movie emotionally. It's quite effective in the movie and also a great stand-alone listen!

Kevin, this was the first score my husband ever purchased for me. I love the movie and love the score more. Enjoy!

I just scrolled up and realized I had shared this anecdote previously. It must be a wonderful memory I guess. smile

He hasn't scored a film since 2009. I wonder what he's up to?

Well listened to the score driving around the city yesterday. Short but sweet, lovely strings and reminded me a bit of Howard Shore's Mrs. Doubtfire. Post groom it kept the dog nice and relaxed in the car.

Listened to some of this on YouTube today and it's lovely! Unfortunately the CD has gone out of print and looks expensive. I'm going to keep my eyes peeled as I'd love to snag a copy of this. I don't recall having heard anything else by Michael Convertino but this was lovely. What I heard of this channeled a little Alan Silvestri/Thomas Newman and I loved it. Doesn't look like he's done anything since 2009, so he's either retired or on a long sabbatical.
