I had the Sony edition - still have a CD-R of it. But the one to go with so far is the Rhino 2 CDs set. - Or so it seems. - That edition came out in 1997 and is out of print for some time now. Didier C. Deutsch was its producer.
According to Joe Caps [posted here in 2005!] the Rhino release is not as good as it should be. He says the "Overture" is "a mess".
Full quote: it was recorded in sections. its incorrectly edited on the rhino woth the secobnd chorus of Shenandoah missing and the chorus frequently oout of sync with the orchestra -- a mess.

Sheandoah - the chorus comes in too early, Enless Prarie, the guitar parts and chorus are out of sync. Frankly, the Overture on the Rhino CD is a mess.

Private tapes have circulated for years made from Alfred Newmans Private tapes. The complete Overture is included in these tapes.

And there is another issue with the release that is obvious after checking with the CD, the "Exit Music":
Trach 21 on Disc 2 of the Rhino set claims to end with the main theme, but this is left out. The timing given on the CD for this track is correct for what is on the CD. The Sony CD does have this main title with its Exit Music and its running time is about 1:40 longer than the Rhino.

But there is more missing. The "Entr'Acte" on the Sony album features the segment "900 Miles" not contained on the Rhino set. [EDIT: It is on the CD, sorry, for mixing this up.]
I suspect there is a more definitive [what a word] editions in the works perhaps. I hope it is.

On technical note regarding the 2nd CD of the Rhino edition:
I've tried to rip it on two different players and with two different programs (EAC and WMP). But tracks #29 - #31 just won't rip at all. The CD itself plays fine in my old Denon Hi-Fi CD-player (which usually has issues with many of the newer released CDs). What a relief. But those last three tracks remain unreadable for the two ripping programs. The CD can't be played through with EAC or WMP either. EAC stops right in the region of those problematic tracks. WMP plays them partly with endless clicks. I don't think the CD is defective actually as it can be played in my old player. It could rather be that there are some digital information contained on the CD that are not related to the actual music, and it distracts the PC programs to read & play the disc correctly. Anyone else has the same problems?

I'd say, based on some obvious shortcomings of the Rhino edition, a newly restored & expanded HTWWW is overdue. It could very well take 3 discs to cover all the material.
La-La Land or Kritzerland, perhaps?

It is the US pressing, not the European that I own.
I'm glad your copies are fine and can completely be ripped as well.

I hate to say this, but the most likely possibility is that Warner Archive will re-issue the Rhino disk on demand as it is. As sad as it is, the number of classic Warner-controlled has reached its low point during the CD era since FSM left the field - let alone the musical-related titles (which have diminished to zero since Rhino Handmade chose to close their soundtrack operations)...

I, for one, would love to hear the expanded Overture. On the Rhino disc, there is clearly an audible edit in the middle of "Shenandoah" indicating that this portion of Overture was heavily edited. I imagine that many sections of the Overture, Entr'acte and Exit Music were more complete.
The Cheyennes cue I've managed to fix by overlaying the missing timpani from the LP version on the old Sony Special Products CD onto the Rhino cue.

But the Rhino set does have "900 Miles." It follows the "Home in the Meadow" opening:

It then segues directly into the brief "Line 'Em" interlude that links it with "On The Banks of the Sacramento." The "Line 'Em" cue is NOT LISTED or credited in the track description, but the lyrics, adapted and adapted by Ken Darby, go like this:
