I saw it on SAE's site last week. I confess to being puzzled by this set. What, I wonder, is the market segment targeted here? At $45 (at SAE) it's surely a lot to ask of someone who doesn't know Barry's work. But, for those that DO know his work, odds seem high (to me) that they'll already have some/many/most of the scores sampled in this set.
Ok, so as a Barry completist this set is clearly of no use to me. But I still fail to understand who else would want this.
You know, I can't think of ANY film composer whose works have been so relentlessly packaged, repackaged and repackaged again, as John Barry.

It might not be anything new to old-time collectors, but did you see those sales figures on the 4CD set? 30,000.
Compilations like these seem like good revenue makers, in that the appeal goes way beyond our small circle. So you can understand why. And why not, if it keeps companies afloat to do more specialist projects later.

I do have a number of these recordings (though not the 4-CD set). And I still think the first two albums - The Classic Film Music of John Barry vols 1 & 2 - are just about ideal overviews of his work. I still listen to them regularly even all these years later.
While I wish Silva Screen well, I do think the earlier versions, which were built with a sense of flow and variety, work much better as compilation albums than this strict chronological approach. (Or worse yet, an alphabetical approach, which is how they've handled some of these in recent years.)
Just on the level of listenability, the early albums are very much worth buying now.

I did not wonder WHY this has been released. Clearly the label believes, and not without reason, that they can sell it.
I want to know is WHO is buying it. As I said, it's not cheap if you're new to Barry. But, if you are NOT new to Barry, odds are you've already got at least part of what's here anyway.
So, who actually buys these box sets?

Perhaps people who can afford it to add to their collection what they love.Despite the fact I was a record vendor years ago I bought 50 LP copies of AGNES OF GOD for my own or friends.

Far from "definitive" this set is! A rather misleading term anyway when it comes to budget priced editions - one never should expect too much.
For instance the complete suite from "The Tamarind Seed" (about 10 minutes long) should be included and not just one piece, "Play it again". I didn't go through the whole track list to compare with what Silva rerecorded in the past from the Barry catalogue. But I think a "definitive" set would include all rerecorded Barry material Silva has recorded in the past.
Well, maybe next time, or not.
