Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

CALVARY

Music Composed by
Patrick Cassidy

“Brendan Gleeson gives a performance of monumental soul … This literate, beautifully crafted picture should translate near-certain critical plaudits into a distinguished arthouse reception worldwide.” —Variety

CALVARY is the new film from acclaimed writer/director John Michael McDonagh (The Guard), and stars Brendan Gleeson (The Guard, Harry Potter), Chris O’Dowd (Moone Boy, Bridesmaids), Kelly Reilly (Sherlock Holmes, Flight), Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones, The Wire), Dylan Moran (Run Fat Boy Run, Shaun of the Dead), Marie-Josée Croze (The Diving Bell and The Butterfly, Maelstrom) and Isaach De Bankolé (The Diving Bell and The Butterfly, Machetero). CALVARY also features a host of other well known Irish actors including Domhnall Gleeson (Anna Karenina, Shadow Dancer), Pat Shortt and David Wilmot.

Calvary’s Father James is the flipside to The Guard’s Sergeant Gerry Boyle. A good man intent on making the world a better place, he is continually shocked and saddened by the spiteful and confrontational inhabitants of his small country town. After being threatened during confession, he must battle the dark forces closing in around him.

Celebrated Irish composer Patrick Cassidy — renowned for his acclaimed works based on Irish mythology — has here created a powerfully emotional and spiritual score, certain to be one of the most talked-about of the year.

CALVARY opens in The U.K. and Ireland on April 11, and arrives in American cinemas this August.

I hope this gets bumped closer to release. I'd love to hear samples and hopefully it doesn't get lost in the sea of early summer releases.

I am definitely curious about this one too...
What I've heard from Cassidy so far was always excellent.
At least colosseum will definitely have enough samples closer to the release date.

WOW! I have been trying to play catch up on a LOT of scores that I haven't had time to listen to and after one after another of music that is just bland, I put this in and I'm like HOLY CRAP! A nice theme and a lot of really gorgeous music. I must have listened to about 20 scores that were, well, boring and bland and this baby comes on.

Pick this up. If you are like me, majority of modern film music is, well boring, I think you will like this little gem.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the similarities to Hans Zimmer & James Newton Howard's music for THE DARK KNIGHT in the opening track, "Na mBeannaiochtai (The Beatitudes I)."

Peter, can this be ordered on the website and picked up at the Varese offices?

I don't know about that. It sounds distinctly like Cassidy to me, from the other music of his I'm familiar with.

The melody that appears roughly 2 minutes into this track and goes on for about 2 minutes is basically the same as the first track (with vocal) in CALVARY.

I haven't listened to the CD yet, but watching the film I thought it was one of the better new scores I've heard onscreen this year (and it's such a joy to be able to see a film with a score that seems, well...musical).

(I specified "new scores" since I've seen Ten Commandments, Mysterious Island and Poseidon Adventure in theaters in the last few months, and it's damn tough to compete with the likes of those).

I don't hear a resemblance between the Dark Knight and Cavalry unless Zimmer and JNH have somehow patented string chords. With that said, if there is a true resemblance there's a good chance then that it was actually Cassidy who wrote the melody in the Dark Knight since he's one of the staff composers are Remote Control.
