Henry Jackman has been tapped to score the upcoming animated feature Big Hero 6. The action comedy adventure directed by Don Hall & Chris Williams (Bolt) is inspired by the Marvel comics of the same title. The movie follows a brilliant robotics prodigy who finds himself in the grips of a criminal plot that threatens to destroy the fast-paced, high-tech city of San Fransokyo. The Big Hero 6 characters first appeared in 1998 and Marvel later on released a series of six comics featuring the team in 2008. TJ Miller has recently been announced as part of the film’s voice cast. Roy Conli (Tangled, Treasure Planet) is producing the Walt Disney Animation Studios production and John Lasseter is executive producing the project. Jackman has previously scored the last Winnie the Pooh movie for Hall and Disney and also composed the music for the studio’s animated hit Wreck-It-Ralph, for which he received an Annie Award. The composer also recently scored his first film for Marvel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Big Hero 6 is set to be released on November 7, 2014 by Walt Disney Pictures. For updates on the animated feature, visit the official movie website.

Is it just me, or is anyone else excited for this film and score? The early reviews pretty much say good things about the film, and while Jackman may not be the most popular composer around these parts, his work on animation definitely seems solid. Puss in Boots and Wreck-It Ralph were both great listens, and I expect good work on this film as well.

I saw the trailer the other night before Maze Runner and the film looked like it will be a lot of fun.
As I've said elsewhere (is there another recent thread about this film/score?) I tend to find Jackman VERY hit and miss, but two of his most recent hits for me were TURBO and WRECK IT RALPH, so if he stays within that territory, it's a good bet I will enjoy this too.

It's on Spotify. Typical generic score. Serves its purpose at best. It's all over the map stylistic wise. Trying to fuse, 80's video game, heavy metal, electronica and traditional orchestra. Probably no accident it has an Anime television score vibe.

Compare "First Flight" from BH6 with "Astro Flies" from Astro Boy or "The Flying Circus" from Rocketeer and you get the drift between inspiring and generic. The second half of the score is better but it just sounds "low budget".

As far as the film itself. It looks like a lot of fun!

Saw the film yesterday with my wife, special needs son and his girlfriend.

Animation was spot on - very impressive. The plot was ok and the score generic at best. It worked well in the film but it could have lifted the visual impact if it had been better.

I too enjoyed the film this week.
The visuals are truly beautiful and I loved the look and design of San Fransokyo.
The plot is a bit patchwork-like of many things, from How To Train Your Dragon and The Incredibles to the latest Marvel films and Scooby-Doo!
Having really enjoyed Jackman's other animated scores (Monsters vs Aliens, Turbo, Wreck It Ralph) I found this score to be a bit lacklustre by comparison.
Only a few moments really stood out for me and I found myself wishing someone like David Newman or Bruce Broughton had been given a crack at this (and a free pass).
Still, the film is great fun.

One thing that puzzles me about this score is that during the credits several people are listed as "Score Choir" but pretty much all the chorus I heard during the film, and on the album, sound kind of synthy to my ears.

I got the score cd last week, I figure $10 is worth it.
A brilliant masterwork? Probably not.

But I do like the effort Jackman shows to integrate and use electronics musically along with the orchestra, and some it is pretty inventive and interesting, and occasionally it meshes with the orchestra pretty well. I think he shows some promise of using electronics musically, as in structuring melodies and themes, and not just for brunt effect or percussive effect like the media ventures. There is a little bit of the heritage of Goldsmith in some of what he is doing, and I think that Jackman deserves credit for his efforts, even if they are entirely successful it counts for a lot to me. Beyond that there are a few tracks in there that are musical and thematic, and it is a very high end master, sonically it is very robust, and it if you listen to it in your car you will drive a lot faster.

Are there any other threads for this score? Kind of says a lot that it only got to 10 replies because of this comment.
