Well firstly, congratulations on your fifth year here. I am unless it is something serious in life a to each one's own person. So I don't like to comment on how people do their thing here. So I can only comment on myself . I basically like to create a limited amount of threads that will hopefully last long.Which was advice that our MR THOR gave me when I started out here a few years back. Meanwhile when I have something to say I like to comment on other peoples threads, for sure if is a topic that I find interesting but nobody else is contributing too. We are all human and I am sure nobody feels good about doing a thread they think is interesting but the comments go zero right off the board in one day.

Well, I'm kinda notorious here as the ultimate thread bumper with encyclopedic knowledge of every thread ever created (a slight exaggeration, but still). I like to have each singular topic in one single thread. I've always felt that moves a discussion FORWARD rather than in circles.
That being said, there are times when a new thread is warranted. For example, if a score only has PR threads or other issues related to the 'item' itself...in those cases, I like to start a new on the MUSIC -- a purely aesthetic thread.
I used to start a lot of threads about general aestethic film music issues, but eventually gave up as they drew little interest. These days, I'm mostly a contributor, occasionally starting a new one. According to Lukas, I have the record of most posts in this forum. I don't know if that's a compliment or a warning sign!

Many months, or even years, might pass before someone wants to discuss a topic that has already run its course here.
The preferred way of proceeding BEFORE starting a thread is to do a search and see what has been discussed before.
If you then feel a need to start a thread exploring an aspect of the topic that has not been previously discussed, go for it.
Otherwise, comment on the existing thread that appeals the most to you. Others will join in if they have more to say. Even if they don't speak up, they will no doubt read what the newest contributor to the older thread has to say.
I know I do.

you forgot the fourth category - annoying bumpers who post irreverent and pointless quotes and one-liners with humour only they can comprehend.

Preferred by who? You? Yes. Everyone? No. Try this at the UltimateGuitar messageboard. They call it "necrobumping", and you'll get a warning for it. Keep doing it and you'll get a ban.

But as for scolding people for not searching first, didn't David recommend we'd start more new topics to facilitate the speed of the board?
