In ‘celebration’ at my fifth anniversary of being a member here as of yesterday, here’s a little personal curio you can help me with...

I’ve noticed some people on the board now seem to be habitual thread starters, creating a new one when the topic is being discussed elsewhere or on an identical thread from not long before. Other folk seem to prefer having a search about and bumping an existing thread to discuss a topic, even from some time ago (my preference – I haven’t started many threads in my time) and some people are just happy to contribute wherever, and rarely start threads at all.

Too many threads cluttering up the board, bump old ones or couldn’t care less?

I’m aware of course that I’ve started another thread to discuss this, but what say you?wink

Well firstly, congratulations on your fifth year here. I am unless it is something serious in life a to each one's own person. So I don't like to comment on how people do their thing here. So I can only comment on myself . I basically like to create a limited amount of threads that will hopefully last long.Which was advice that our MR THOR gave me when I started out here a few years back. Meanwhile when I have something to say I like to comment on other peoples threads, for sure if is a topic that I find interesting but nobody else is contributing too. We are all human and I am sure nobody feels good about doing a thread they think is interesting but the comments go zero right off the board in one day.

Glad you have been here for 5 years, Thomas.

I try the search engine first if I want to resurrect an old topic. If I'm not sure that we've talked about a topic before, I still try the search engine. Sometimes I fail at finding an old topic, but members have helped me with the engine. If someone starts a new topic that we've done before, we should exercise forgiveness. I don't find that a problem.

I think topics have a natural death over time. Sure, no one likes to write and only get a few responses, but that is the nature of board posts. Some topics attract lots of responses and attention, and some don't. It is a gamble. Is it possible to start too many topics which may dilute responses? Well, I guess it is possible.

Well, I'm kinda notorious here as the ultimate thread bumper with encyclopedic knowledge of every thread ever created (a slight exaggeration, but still). I like to have each singular topic in one single thread. I've always felt that moves a discussion FORWARD rather than in circles.

That being said, there are times when a new thread is warranted. For example, if a score only has PR threads or other issues related to the 'item' itself...in those cases, I like to start a new on the MUSIC -- a purely aesthetic thread.

I used to start a lot of threads about general aestethic film music issues, but eventually gave up as they drew little interest. These days, I'm mostly a contributor, occasionally starting a new one. According to Lukas, I have the record of most posts in this forum. I don't know if that's a compliment or a warning sign! smile

Many months, or even years, might pass before someone wants to discuss a topic that has already run its course here.

The preferred way of proceeding BEFORE starting a thread is to do a search and see what has been discussed before.

If you then feel a need to start a thread exploring an aspect of the topic that has not been previously discussed, go for it.

Otherwise, comment on the existing thread that appeals the most to you. Others will join in if they have more to say. Even if they don't speak up, they will no doubt read what the newest contributor to the older thread has to say.

I know I do.

For existing topics I am a "bumper". I prefer bumping an old thread if I want to continue a discussion.

For OT discussions I'm a contributor. I start a lot of new threads in the non soundtrack forum, which I think has better discussions ironically enough.

I've been a member for about 6 years. I spend most of my time on this site as a lurker. I've been a film music fan for decades, but I have learned a lot by just reading posts by people who have a lot of inside knowledge. Plus, this site is a great way to keep up with what's being released.

What about those of us who are not insiders and have no idea what we're talking about? wink

i have been a gynaecologist at this hospital for over 25 years and i can categorically tell you that it is spelt WOOOMMMBAA!!

you forgot the fourth category - annoying bumpers who post irreverent and pointless quotes and one-liners with humour only they can comprehend.

love Bill Carson, collector, italian western afficionado, writer, journalist, broadcaster, double poster, letcher of 70s film and tv ladies, and extra on the set of Solomon and Sheba!!

I wouldn't say I'm a serial thread started although most of my topics are interests not shared by 99% of those here. Despite the lack of interest in what I normally go on about, there are always a few FSMers who are kindred spirits in that they share my interests.

As for bumping threads, I'll bump the good ones that didn't descend into back-biting, ass-stomping, name-calling bitchfests and which had the most illuminating and insightful contributions. It's kind of Thor to remind us of pre-existing topics because I do go to those as well. I'm probably one of the few here who doesn't get angry when he reminds us of said topics (though I'll still joke with him about it).

Sadly, I'm often a "serial thread killer", as many times after I post something, a thread just trails off into slow death, not to be seen again.... wink

I am a starter and a bumper. What I really hate is when someone feels the need to publicly call you out for starting a new thread on something. Seriously? All you have to do is cut and paste the exsisting thread link if you feel a burning need to point it out. I am somewhat new here (a year as of 03/24/14) and I still get excited over a new release or something new to me and at times start a new thread. There are plenty of times I resurrect an old thread. I have even been called out on that but not as often. Anyway, just do it nicely that's all.

TO EDWZOOMOM- I agree with you 100% and we all know who they are. Like we are supposed to have all the time in the world in our busy day to check through the whole engine to see if it was done before. Maybe people who live simple lives or are unemployed can do that but when one is a busy mature adults with loads of respond able tasks in our daily lives, NO Way JOSE.

I personally always go through the trouble of checking the search engine, not only to see if the topic has been discussed, but I want to read what was discussed about it. I also find it amusing when older threads get bumped and people start reacting to posts from 5 years ago as if they were posted yesterday. big grin But as for scolding people for not searching first, didn't David recommend we'd start more new topics to facilitate the speed of the board?

Preferred by who? You? Yes. Everyone? No. Try this at the UltimateGuitar messageboard. They call it "necrobumping", and you'll get a warning for it. Keep doing it and you'll get a ban.

I'm a THREAD KILLER!
Any discussion about a film or score will usually dry up and die after I have put in my tuppence worth.
If I start one, it usually putters out fairly quickly.

Sounds more like "micromanaging" to me. Just sayin'.
