King Kong vs Godzilla and King Kong Escapes both look great on blu-ray. K vs Godzilla looked just okay in its DVD release and given the bastardized American cut I didn't expect much from the blu, but despite the grain and some momentary dirt and composite artifacts, I was surprised how sharp the new transfer is. King Kong Escapes on the other hand had a great original DVD transfer, and the blu-ray looks even better--fantastic color and clarity.
I don't have anything to say about the DVDs Andy reported. Instead, I want to extend a HUGE congratulations to Andy on the arrival of his new son!! How wonderful.
It's kind of disappointing that none of the other Showa flicks are getting releases. Australia's boxsets kill everyone else's, although even theirs aren't perfect, as their Heisei set misses RETURN OF GODZILLA/1984 and GODZILLA VS BIOLLANTE.
A few Showa movies are getting blu releases--Godzilla vs. Gigan, Godzilla vs. Hedorah and Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster. Hopefully if these other blu-rays do well they'll put out the others.
And I add my congratulations to Andy and his family--looks like I buried the lede! But Godzilla is always burying things...
