I love that you called it "the cinema". I am the only person I actually know in real life that refers to it that way. And when I do, I get these vacant expressions from the doinks I'm talking to... as though I'm from another planet.
It's occurred to me that over the last few days I've watched films via the following media:

Notwithstanding the varying merits of these films, what wonderful times we live in.
You forget another "delivery system": I have friends who insist on describing the plots and scenes to me in great detail, as well as the complete endings---all before I've had a chance to view the films. This is not one of the better media formats!

I call them "talking pictures" as in....."seeing GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL at the talking-picture place."
My father's stepmother, my grandmother, couldn't speak english. We'd occasionally go to the Majestic, typically on a friday night, and she'd watch the movie in the cinema and not understand a single word of dialog, but still be happy she'd had a night out at the "talkies."

One thing we haven't done in ages - literally can't remember the last time - is see beforehand when a film is on the telly and watch it when it's actually broadcast. In fact, we watch very little TV live, recording everything to watch at our convenience. The exceptions to this are live sporting events and results shows, for obvious reasons, and occasionally the news.
Signing up to Netflix by and large rendered a fair proportion of our bluray collection superfluous - but there's always the extras...

Yep, I remember when I was younger, scouring the listings in the local paper for movies I was hoping to catch. How things have changed!
I love Netflix for several reasons. I can watch HD programing on my second HD television for $8 dollars a month instead of an addional $15 dollars a month the cable company wants to rent me for a second DVR. What a rip off!
I think all the channels are in cahoots when it comes to commercials. I rarely watch live television and DVR like many others. But I watch sports live. When ever there is a commercial I will usually channel hop to another predetermined show. Usually a repeat in syndication. Sometimes another live sporting event. And it never fails, when one channel goes to commercial, the other is in a commercial break too!
