I've heard a music/effects track of unknown origin that sounded great, and the effects werent too bad (the usual screams and furniture/door effects). If they used it for this blu-ray, it will be a nice bonus feature. Only downside is it's Region 2.

A classic eerie score by LES which helped this film become one of the best POE films ever.

I just pre ordered this today .... did not realise it had an ISO score ... thanks for the info!!

Arrow films are leading the way in ISO scores at the moment ( apart from Twilight Time )

They seem to be dedicated to relesing jam packed blu rays .

I will never forgive Arrow for not isolating Herrmann's score for OBSESSION (ditto their upcoming release of SISTERS).

That said, I've preordered both SISTERS and PIT AND THE PENDULUM.

Yes , i agree , i would have loved both sisters and obsession with ISO scores.

Not sure why they did not have ISO scores but i am sure they would have done if they could have,.

ive pre ordered sisters too.

Wasn't the score to OBSESSION isolated on the Pioneer Special Edition laserdisc?

Any hope for a CD, under the circumstances?

I can't imagine any of the labels releasing a full CD using a Music & Effects track as a source.

FSM released The Satan Bug with M&E. I know labels can't experiment. But knowing how well Les Baxter has sold these last few years and hearing how Pit and the Pendulum is probably the most sought after score of his, it might be a good one to release even with the sound effects. I have the version that has been floating around the net for the last few years. The sound effects are light. This version is a bit dicey and is missing about 5 minutes of music. I will say that the end sequence when the pendulum swings . . .this is one time where sound effects almost are apart of the score. Baxter's pulsating percussion bangs away as the metal rusty pendulum squeaks and creaks. Oh yes . . . this is one M&E to get out on CD!!!

I'd still want it without the effects, but an alternate track with squeaking would be apropoe.

There seem to be different kinds of music/effects tracks - I imagine someone in the industry could explain fully. Seems like there's the one used in a film with good sound quality, and ones for foreign language dubbing which might omit some of the original music. The latter are usually pretty poor condition. You can find them on laserdiscs as well as some dvd or blu-ray.

The problem is that no isolated music track have shown up for PATP.
And yes, the M&E track is mixed specifically for foreign markets. Sometimes the older M&Es are in pristine condition and sometimes different music is used. The M&E for the 50s The Manster has some cues that aren't the ones used in the actual American version.
The M&E for the Alastair Simm "A Christmas Carol" has all the music, very light sound effects, but a little bleed through of dialogue. Sometime M&Es are added to soundtrack albums where there was nothing else to use. Rhino had to use a small section in the 2 disc Gone With the Wind and Black Sabbath by Les Baxter had to use a few minutes to flesh out the Wurdalak track.

FSM released The Satan Bug with M&E.

That was just partial M & E, and even that was controversial with some. I recall somebody on another forum who had apparently had never bought anything else froim FSM tearing into them over the M & E in SATAN BUG. That sort of thing isn't going to encourage labels to use M & E for an entire score.

isnt there sophisticated software that can allow the user to manually eliminate unwanted sounds? I got the impression they were separating audio into separate channels for the PSYCHO 5.1 blu-ray, as seen in the documentary. But maybe they utilized the music from the source for the laserdisc isolated track.

That technology is in its infancy and is thus far being used only in forensic work, as far as I know.

Makes one wonder what LES was thinking when scoring that unique score, Fantastic MOOD.

Yes, it's such an outstanding score! Would be so great if a label could release it using the wonders of modern mastering/restoring technology.

chriss, why did you wait over five years to quote dan the man? Now he's gone forever, I think.

On the issue of PIT AND THE PENDULUM, I would absolutely love to see a (decent) release of this but it does look improbable at the moment. It's one of Baxter's finest. I understand virtually nothing of tech talk, but I suppose that music-only dubbing masters are lost or something? Are these also called "stems"?

So if we COULD get a Baxter PIT AND THE PENDULUM, it would be similar to La-La Land's X - THE MAN WITH THE X-RAY EYES? I found that a most laudable effort from LLL, but it always leaves me a bit frustrated.

Just thinking out loud, so forgive the ramble... Quartet put out David Lee's magnificent score for the Corman/Price/Poe MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH without sound effects. Again I can't recall offhand, but didn't they use the "music stems", adjusting volume etc to even it out from what was heard in the film behind dialogue and effects?

Hang on, the obvious one was eluding me. When Intrada released HOUSE OF USHER in 2011 it was a dream come true for me and many others. I'd just imagined all those decades that it was another score which had been lost. If it hadn't been, why wait until 2011 to release it? I think that the source of that was the music-only masters with cue assemblies and crossfades as heard in the film, but again ironed out during remastering in order to compensate for changes in volume during dialogue scenes etc. So were those the "music stems"?

Right well, I've shown myself to be a proper gibbon with those novice's questions. The bottom line is that when HOUSE OF USHER came out it was like a miracle. Is it so unlikely that a similar miracle could happen with PIT AND THE PENDULUM?

Graham, I don't know Dan. It was the only Pit & Pendulum thread I found and I liked the sentence. smile

I own all those "stems" releases on Quartet or LLL's Seconds. I don't understand the tech talk either but I hope that miracles can happen. I like Baxter's music very much and I think that Usher and Pendulum are his masterworks. So would I buy a less then perfect release in a heartbeat? Yes! smile
