Interesting read!

"People have used it as a temp. One of the hardest pieces on Face/Off was temped to David Arnold’s music for Independence Day. It was hell. Everything was being compared to this and you can’t get past it. He later said to me, 'That fucking Bourne Identity score keeps coming up in fucking temp scores.' I said, 'Well, I got you back.' That’s why film music is getting terribly uninteresting. It’s a snake sucking its own cock. Everything sounds like The Dark Knight if it is big and epic. Everything sounds like Bourne Identity if it is small and spy-y."

Also interesting to read Burwell has recorded stuff for The Bourne Indentity. Would be very interested to hear that

Gotta love that comment by John Powell about the state of film music today.

And now he's taking another break from film scoring to do some classical pieces, according to Film Music Reporter.
Me thinks Mr Powell is a bit fed up with film soundtracks.

From my Rejected Film Scores website:
After recording a tiny bit over 20 minutes of score, the film went through some changes and by the time they needed to finish the score, Burwell was not available. The score consisted of about 75 players, synth, and atmospheric guitar, and was more melodic than Powell's effort.

From what Powell said, and from what I've heard elsewhere, I think this is the typical face-saving "we delayed and he was no longer available" euphemism for "we wanted something else."

Well, my source was close to Burwell, so I'm a little mroe inclined to believe what I got.

I have no inside knowledge, but honestly, I would say a close friend would be more likely to spin it in his favor than a different source.

(Friends of mine recently left a television show they co-created, and ask anybody close to them and they will tell you my friends had too many other projects going and left the show to pursue them. Except I happen to know that they were fired because the network hated their work and them.)

Good interview. I like those interviews about a composer's CAREER, instead of an over-detailed look on ONE score.

And he is raising some valid points about film music.
