As I recall, Barbra saw how some of the other musicals were faring and she was the one who suggested to Paramount that it be cut down.

Mike, Miss Streisand tended to save everything from all of her films, ncljuding recording sessions.
She may have the alternate tracks for Dolly
It would alsobe good to hear the finale of Before the Parade Passes by with the original chor us back up, some of which can be heard in the trailer.

I wonder if she has the nearly one hour of footage plus songs that were cut from ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER. The story goes that it was originally produced as a roadshow attraction but, during post production, Paramount decided to cut it down to a regular feature length.

Much of the cut CLEAR DAY pre-records can be found online along with many photos of the cut sequences. When originally released, Paramount seemed determined to bury it. With little fanfare, it y ran exclusive for less than 3 months, then wide for a couple of weeks then disappeared.

Over at Home Theatre Forum and the Blu-ray forum, it has apparently been brought up that the new Blu-ray of Thoroughly Modern Millie from Kino only has the roadshow portions (Overture, Entr’Acte, and Exit Music) in mono despite appearing in stereo on the DVD. When the KL Insider was asked about this, his response was that the mono was all Universal had for those bits. Would you by any chance be able to weigh in on this, Mr. Matessino?

I'll look into it. Activities related to video mastering do not cross over with what the music department is doing as much as they should. TMM is not something that's come up at all on my end.

I will take this thread-bump opportunity, however, in case I haven't said so elsewhere, to say that there was a plan for La-La Land to follow up the 50th anniversary release of Doctor Dolittle with one for Hello, Dolly in 2019, but the original mags had gone so far into extreme vinegar syndrome as to be past saving. Of course, we were also dealing with Nick Redman's passing and the Disney merger at the same time so the agenda was to get as much material in hand as possible for releases they wanted to do (such as the Apes series and Williams disaster scores).

The Dolly! material, as well as Star!, had never been transferred because there was never anything that could have been done with it in past years due to Universal Music Group controlling the soundtrack rights. Within the last decade, of course, dual licenses with them became feasible. We saved Dolittle just under the wire, Dolly and Star! have deteriorated.

I don't know who controls the rights to South Pacific now, but I have a copy of the complete songs and underscore released on "that which shall not be mentioned" and I would still pay for a legit copy if it could occur. Since Millie's score won the Academy Award for Elmer Bernstein, it seems like Universal would see the value in a release of the complete score.

Sad news about the Dolly score, Lionel Newman and Lenny Hayton supervising, Herb spencer, Alexander Courage...
a terrific work from an "all star cast"

Are all the elements deteriorated or partially ?

I didn't see them myself, but our stalwart Ron Fuglsby, who retired from Fox at the exact same time as Nick's passing and the Disney merger, said that he nearly passed out when he opened the first can. I don't know anything beyond that but I believe they were all marked toxic.

Ron Fugulsby, a key player. I remember his name when he was mentioned in one of the STAR WARS Special Editions FSM issue. It was he who found the the complete masters of STAR WARS and THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Tapes back then...

It breaks my heart that there is now very little hope for an expanded Hello, Dolly! I really believed that I would see a 2-CD set by the time I reached my 65th birthday, along with maybe a complete Star! So it looks like I will have to continue to cherish the great-sounding laser discs for the remainder of my term on this earth!

As compensation, maybe we'll get a complete South Pacific at some point? Or even a CD of the Scrooge soundtrack album this Christmas?

Oh, and is a complete Thoroughly Modern Millie on the cards? The MCA CD is awful.

There must be some Dolly material available as I have heard several purely music (no effects) selections.

It's better than having nothing.

Not that Julie Andrews wouldn't have, infinitely, helped MY FAIR LADY, but what it really needed, was a much better director. Someone who knew they were directing a widescreen musical motion picture in the 1960s, not a staid drawing room comedy, from the 1930s.
Agreed. George Cukor did a decent job on "My Fair Lady", but it's more a photographed stage play than a movie. I've heard that Jack Warner originally wanted Vincente Minnelli to direct, but Minnelli turned it down. Maybe he should have then turned to Stanley Donen or Gene Kelly instead. They would have been better choices than Cukor.

I've been wanting an expanded "Hello, Dolly!" for years. Please, La-La-Land or Kritzerland, DO IT!

As awesome as that would be, I remember reading that the original tapes had deteriorated beyond saving. Musical soundtracks also don't tend to sell well either.

Yes, you have to scroll up. The Dolly material was declared toxic and untransferable four years ago. This was right before the Disney merger and I don't know the fate of the physical assets.
