Well here's a shock, my CD arrived today.

I don't actually have it, the AHAE site sends everything by FedEd and FedEx attempted delivery today, but I was at work. But it'll be arriving at the FedEx store a block from my house tomorrow and I can pick it up there.

(Getting FedEx packages delivered is a NIGHTMARE if you live in a large apartment building with controlled access)

I was nervous that all the AHAE turmoil would mean I would never see this CD, but I should have it in hand tomorrowsmile

Glad to hear that^. I just went to the site with the intention of buying it, but shipping to Korea via FedEx is $30. ABC just posted a story about Yoo/AHAE by the way. I know I said I'd try keep the discussion music related, but this story is just so fascinating... and two film composers were commissioned by the guy. I think it could be Korea's/Asia's biggest man hunt:

Picked up my CD today at the FedEx store.

Tracks
1) Birds and Water Deer 9:59
2) Water 5:42
3) Sky 6:08
4) Landscape 5:04

Track 1 is propulsive, repetitive, but not especially melodic.
Track 2 is sort of ethereal, light and dream-like, a bit like the Carrington score.
Track 3 is my favorite on the album, it's exceptionally melodic. The first half is in the style of the Wonderland score, while the second half is the main theme from Everyday, which sadly never got an album. The original piece is heard in this trailer from 0:44 on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3u0VpoO44bI
Track 4 is a gorgeous, darkly ominous piece that feels a bit like the music in The End of the Affair.

This is an expensive little oddity of an album that can only be ordered directly from a Korean religious cult, so I know it's not for everyone, lol, but Nyman fans will definitely enjoy it.

Thanks James^ I love the fact the last piece is "darkly ominous". Perhaps Michael knew who he was working for^^.

Simon Rhodes worked on the recording of the symphony. I'd be curious to know if, in hindsight, there was anything odd about the recording session. Anyone know how to get in touch? Google doesn't seem to know his email address.

Composers Nicholas Bacri and Michael Nyman will conduct the London Symphony Orchestra in their own works inspired by the great Korean photographer Ahae. Michael Fine will produce the sessions at Abbey Road Studios with Simon Rhodes, engineer.

Looks like "Ahae" turned up dead:

What a BIZARRE story.

No offense to Michael Nyman, but this sounds like a story better set to music by Michael Kamen and Queen:
http://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/news/article/article.aspx?aid=2992359

"YTN cable news channel reported Tuesday that Yoo’s head was separated from the rest of his body"

In another music-related tidbit, LSO flautist Gareth Davies describes the bizarre experience of meeting Yoo's son in Seoul last year. Since his father's death has now been confirmed, that son is now Korea's most wanted, assuming he's also not lying in a ditch somewhere sans his head.

Cool! Interesting to know they're still fulfilling orders after the undignified end of their leader.

I might have to pick this up after all. I haven't been exposed to much of Michael's music and this just has too much weirdness associated with it to pass up. I honestly expected the company selling the CD to close shop months ago. Since the CD is produced by Michael's own label, I asked his sales rep if the CD will be available from Michael's own site. I'd rather order from Michael's site than the cult's, but getting any kind of information from Michael's reps about anything AHAE related has proven to be impossible. Michael's site claims to sell all CDs released by Michael's label, but makes no mention of the AHAE chamber piece which was released by Michael's label.

The IRS is working with Korean authorities to track Yoo's wealth in the US. So far the only arrests (and there have been dozens) have been of Koreans, but it'll be interesting see if any of his American employees/followers end up in hand cuffs.

I emailed the LSO, Michael Nyman's rep, and the publishing company (www.musicsalesclassical.com) that last year reported the upcoming release of the symphony. No one has said if the CD will go ahead, and from their emails, the whole scandal is (understandably) quit a touchy subject. The LSO's reply was the only normal and sensible reply I got and that basically said the LSO isn't involved with the release of the CD and consequently has no information about release plans.

Michael's manager and the Music Sales Classical rep both responded with the exact same legalese response that didn't answer the question. They were more concerned with feigning ignorance and denying any wrongdoing than with answering a rather simple yes/no/we don't know question. "We have no personal knowledge of the allegations." Whatever that means. If they're waiting for Yoo or his fugitive son to inform them in person about the allegations, I think they'll be waiting a while.

He was arrested yesterday. That brings the man-hunt aspect to this sad crazy story to a close. The biggest in the country's history. At its peak, it involved tens of thousands of police, the army, and even a warship.

And regarding the previously announced AHAE symphony CD announced here
http://www.musicsalesclassical.com/news/2798

I enquired about the CD - the LSO previously confirmed the piece has been recorded - and I got this response a couple of days ago from Music Sales Classical:

"Thank you for your email enquiring about Mr Nyman’s Symphony No.6.
Mr Nyman, his manager Ms Blundell and we his publisher, have no personal knowledge of the reported allegations against Mr. Ahae and are not in a position to comment on them.

Michael Nyman’s engagement with Mr Ahae is purely creative and took place in the context of a commission for a symphonic work by Ahae, the artist/photographer. The commission was endorsed/recommended by other respectable and artistically credible entities."

It is completely false that Michael Nyman, his manager, and his publisher have no knowledge of the allegations/scandal.

Why does it say on the AHAE wiki page that his body was found in a field badly decomposed though a post here said he'd be arrest.

It appears, at least form the documentary Two Symphonies Two Days- that Nyman's "Symphonies" are just more reworkings of previously existing music. As a famous "reworker" of previous material - it must be hard to dig out 11 symphonies out of one's catalogue without writing anything new. Also...why would anyone do that?

Music Sales and Nyman have also dropped the "Ahae" from the Symphony No.6 title.

I have a sort of love-hate relationship with Nyman's music. The "Ahae" CD is more closer to the hate side. Maybe I should give it a second run through, but only the second half of the CD showed much promise to me.

I'm fine with film music composers re-branding their work as symphonies. Symphonies and concertos get performed in the concert hall, while film music doesn't. I don't know if it's just the publishing aspect of it (easier to get the scores for symphonies and concertos), but there is a boatload of terrible new concert music being commissioned and performed while good film music gets ignored.

He was never arrested - at least not this time around. He went into hiding and became the country's most wanted, aided by his cult, as soon as prosecutors began investigating him. At the peak of the manhunt, there were wanted posters all over the country.. I couldn't walk 20 meters without seeing one, and even navy vessels took part in the search.

He was previously arrested in the early 1990s and sentenced to 4 years jail for fraud. He was also investigated regarding the mass suicide/possible murder of 32 members of a splinter cult, but wasn't charged.

The last remaining family member on the run is Keith Yoo, who worked closely with Nyman on the AHAE projects. The New York Times has written two good pieces on the scandal and more are coming.

The symphony hasn't been released yet - it was recorded by the LSO for a planed release, but those plans may have been ditched by the scandal. Not sure whether the symphony expands on the earlier AHAE chamber music or includes previously written music. The score is available here to browse in PDF form if anyone has the knowledge to determine if it's entirely new or not:
http://www.musicsalesclassical.com/composer/work/1149/49006

For comparison, here are excerpts from the earlier chamber piece's score:
