Love this score! In a heart beat, i would purchase a copy or 12! This just scared the crap outta me when i was a kid! And yep, those voices drive me wild!

Thanks for this thread. Again. Maybe if we bring it up again, somebody will listen.

I was not referring to the simple ending of the plot, but the mental vibes cause by the music and editing which made the film seem like one big dream.I thought it worked perfect. etc etc etc

I was really (and quite vaguely) referring to the very odd (and unique? I don't know) occurrence of the ending of the film being completely reshot (along with a few filler scenes) for the UK release of the film. In "Our" version, there is no dream etc, no return to the start of the movie, the aliens are blown to kingdom come...

Wow , that is very interesting. Just goes to show you how film is made of so many pieces, alter it a little and you can ruin the whole effect. Sorry to hear that.

The original US version is pretty freely available on DVD (with the "British" extra scenes and reshot ending as extras)....I understand the Region 1 version even has both versions available via seamless branching (but uses the same print, which is showing its age....very badly....)...but it is a very curious incident in the annals of film history...I was very confused when revisiting the film as an adult to see that the ending I thought should happen wasn't there, and instead we had this odd "dream/no dream" scene...was questioning my memories of the film a lot!! This was before the days of this information being freely available on the internet, of course...but I was extremely confused!!!

I hope for a "Collector's Edition", remastered in all its glory one day....with BOTH versions.

This is exactly the kind of thread that keeps me hanging around here! As a few others here have confessed, the film scared the crap out of me when I first saw it as a kid. At the time there was a sandy stretch behind my house, out my window as a matter of fact, that looked to me exactly like the one in the film, and it still gives me the creeps thinking about it. Anyway, thanks to all the participants in this thread, and to Charles, who always has something great to contribute when the topic is sci fi. Needless to say, I would probably sacrifice a knuckle for a half-decent recording of the score with those oh-so-weird voices...

I thought we might have heard something from Jim Wynorski by now, since I know he's crazy about this film and score as well...

Can you remind me...? Does the ending of the UK version have the kid running while a montage of earlier scenes is superimposed? It's inspired! The shots then go into time-reverse creating a wonderfully transcendent effect that I find strangely moving. It's all topped off with the amazing choir tracks. Terrific movie making, all done in the edit! Quite brilliant for the period.

Nothing new to report, the tapes are misplaced, but I feel someday, someone will find them by accident. There were copies of the score around in the 70s, because (as I once mentioned) some porno films were using snips from the score in different X-rated trailer and productions.

I just found this thread and I have been a fan of this movie since I was a "traumatized" kid (in a good way) ! I would LOVE to get a copy of your CD, Charlie. The isolated music on You Tube is mesmorizing! Thanks for posting it! Can you post more or post a list of cut titles to go with the video?

THANK YOU!!

Lar

And who do we suppose was the nice person who provided Image with the alternate ending footage - in 35mm yet. Who do we think that nice person was?

And it was all just an American remake of 400 BLOWS.

Harry Truman?

The INVADERS FROM MARS choir voices traumatized me as a kid.

Nightmare inducing for life. Keep me away from the sandpit. That and The Thing.
