And I thought Talgorn really wrote like John Williams!!!
If someone had put this on for me and said 'check this out, new Williams score to The Patriot 2' I would not have batted an eyelid. They also would not have left the room with it! wink
I always thought if Spielberg, in the utter world-ending scenario of Williams being unable to score his film, wanted to keep his musical soundscape intact, he should hire Talgorn, but now Kaska would be just as appropriate.
It's quite amazing how similar it sounds to the style of John Williams, but not in that Debney/McNeely way of outright rips or steals. More just singing in the same key.
It is also bloody great.
Everything RM says above.
Bold, thematic, fully orchestral, well-developed with some lovely choir moments.
It is VERY like The Patriot at times (to my ears at least), but that's no bad thing for me, cos I love that score too.
Add Kaska to that list of really talented composers NOT scoring any bigger listed films these days (Broughton, Holdridge, Eidelman, David Newman, A B Rubinstein, Robert Folk et al).

"Kaska also has several pieces on the Heroic Sounds CD"
---------------------
One of which, Hymn Of Praise, is absolutely gorgeous.
It reminds me of going to church when I was younger (a chore, forced upon us by me mum).
However, if they'd have played music like that (churchy organ stuff served up like John Williams ala Monsignor and Goodbye Mr Chips) I'd have gone twice a week (thrice on Sundays!) wink

Been really hitting this score in the past week.
Anyone suffering John Williams withdrawal should buy it immediately.
It reaches those parts - like some works from Talgorn - that really see me through these leaner JW years.
Some of the hymn and choir moments are truly beautiful.
Great stuff.

You missed it, I'd guess, because it didn't get any wide distribution. The studio appears to be a small studio making family-friendly Catholic films; this is movie is advertised as a dramatization of the War in the Vendée with 250 characters under the age of 21 and not a drop of blood. Both the film and the score can be found on their website: http://www.navispictures.com/product_p/np-wotv.htm

Wow, after reading their description, there's no way I'm giving money to these bigot revisionists. Maybe I'll get this second hand if it's this good - and if my king allows LOL.

I'll definitely be getting this soon - Love his symphonic works CD and I know he's had a hand in orchestrating a number of the better Hollywood scores of recent-ish years, like JOHN CARTER and Debney's DREAM HOUSE and LAIR.

Just discovered this score, and I must say it is really fantastic. Kaska is an incredible talent. I wish more of his classical pieces would be recorded (especially The Wizard of Menlo Park).

Haven't seen the movie (and no real interest) but I can listen to this score over and over and over without thinking of all the other music I have that I could be listening to instead. That is unusual for me.

Same with the disc of tone poems (which I'm enjoying again right now).
Just ordered his disc of Chamber Works...

I like the Vendée score, but that's an interesting comment to me because I can't listen to the Tone Poems disc without being frequently reminded of Williams' Harry Potter and Revenge of the Sith.

It is true that there is a familiarity in the music. Not very original, but no less enjoyable for that.
I'm not one of those who judges the value of music by how original it is.

Finally got this, because I love Kaska's TONE POEMS (Especially the gorgeous, soaring and impressionistic wonder of "The Lake Isle of Innissfree").

As mentioned elsewhere, not a ton of originality in the progressions, harmonies, etc. but man that big timpani-pounding/choral send off at the end is one for the books!

His most BLATANTLY Williams-inspired piece simply must be his "Ballade" for Euphonium and Orchestra from the CD MAJESTIC JOURNEYS, which sounds so much like 'Hans and the Princess' from Star Wars that you'll think you cued up the wrong CD.

But still, at the top of his game, this guy really can write and orchestrate better than most anyone else in Western scoring at the moment. I hope he gets an assignment of reasonable profile in the near-future.

Thanks (again) RM for putting me onto this score. Hope you're blasting it in the heavens smile
I will play it today in your honour.
R.I.P Good Sir.

Well, this thread has taken a sad turn. Still love this score. RIP Robert.
