I used to have this wonderful Fred Zinnemann film starring Montgomery Clift in a sensitive role as an American G.I. in war-ravaged Europe. MGM had issued this Oscar winning film on videotape back in the day, but it's never been available on dvd. It's now been remade by an Oscar winning Director, but, well, it sounds pretty awful now.

oops, someone e-mailed me to say it's available 'on demand' at The Warner Store.

It seems more of an 'updating' than a remake.

Yes, the original was very atmospheric, and plugged in to a certain time and problem.

But Zinnemann made 'relevant' films about the situations in the world current, or 'universal' ethical issues. He was never just about entertainment. So since this story of the endless displaced is everywhere at the mo, Sudan, C.A.R., East Timur, Chechnya, The Congo, Zimbabwe, Thailand, Eritrea, Ethiopia, all over E. Europe, etc., etc., (even Nigeria), it's got mileage today again.

Wait and see. It's a valid gesture.

A dvd of THE SEARCH is available for purchase from the Warner Archive Collection -

I have always loved this film - this is Montgomery Clift's film debut and it is easy to see why he became an immediate star with this film and RED RIVER (just released on BR by Criterion BTW).
