I have the first expansion of this and I'm not entirely sold yet on the new release. For those who have both (and can be objective about it), is it worth the double dip? My soundtrack budget these days forces me to be pretty selective.

What exactly sounds better, guys? Is it better or is it louder? I have bought numerous reissues for better sound quality; I think about two-thirds of the time when I do an A/B test it just means louder. The old release sounds quite good, so I am wondering what could possibly be improved. This isn't what I would consider a new mix, unlike LLL's Star Trek or going back to Tomlinson's superior stereo mixes for The Great Train Robbery.

Just did my first listen-through. Another fantastic presentation from Intrada. One of those scores that, even without the movie itself, tells a compelling story. I can't even fathom the mental dexterity and imagination it takes to score a movie. And Goldsmith did it over and over and over. Now, of course, I'm going to have to immerse myself in his other early-80s scores. What a mother lode. -

Ran this magnificent CD straight through...marvelous. Intrada has done another stand-up job here. IMHO the sound quality is much improved--not just louder. I must point out that I REALLY enjoyed the liner notes that Douglass Fake and Roger Fiegelson put together...they relate what they know and what they've experienced, they don't venture into areas that become speculative or fill the pages with superfluous prose...much appreciated. NIGHT CROSSING is Goldsmith at his early 80's best. True, there are echoes of THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL in the waltz, THE BLUE MAX in the balloon flying sequences (they are flying in Germany after all!), and that 3/4-5/8 conspiracy percussion undercurrent that first appeared in CAPRICORN ONE. This is a case where form follows function. None of these "echoes" disqualifies this work as one helluva enjoyable, original score. As an aside, I first saw NIGHT CROSSING at a brand-new theatre in Costa Mesa, California, as the first balloon flight soared into the night, the center channel went out for 10-15 minutes...No dialogue! Everyone in the theatre was bitching up a storm. I found it pretty cool, because it was mostly Jerry Goldsmith's score and the sound effects in the Left, Right and Surrounds. I longed for the album then, and have had every LP and CD version since!

I envy those of you who have their copies! I'm still waiting for SAE to send mine. I don't suppose an extra couple of weeks waiting will hurt, but next time I have an order made up exclusively of Intrada titles, I think I'll try Intrada themselves. A very sensible idea sir. I've been relying increasingly on Intrada for my soundtrack shopping needs and I must say that the results are brilliant.

This was the most impossible to find thread EVER. I got a ticky poppy one too, asking Intrada for a possible replacement now, or if we are all just imagining things. I wanna bask in the remastered, shiny glow of one of my all time favorite Goldsmith's too!!!!! Classy package and aside from the above, it does sound good - not sure if better than the prior limited release, but we'll see. I can say that anyone who has the 1st, 47min. issue - please, for the love of all that is good, dump that thing. Substandard tapes were used and I DID a/b that one to the other edition - its another case of Len Engel-itis for the mix. So, if you fawn over the original Varese THE FINAL CONFLICT cd, too.....enjoy the original Intrada Night Crossing as much! ;-/

My copy arrived last week and I got down to it. The sound quality jump is astounding. The Eric Tomlinson effect was recaptured in the mix and I was very impressed. I had the previous Intrada album but at that point I hadnt gotten into the score and possible because the sound wasnt that great to begin with and had to let go off my copy to an eager buyer. But here the picture changes completely. The sonics are upfront and have that oomph. Liner notes are really great and the two major alternate and revised cues are also well explained in the booklet. Hats off to the Intrada team for making a top notch production here. This one is a keeper !

I 'sorry, but I belong to the group of wanting all complete, all-inclusive. So you would prefer the version hacked up by somebody else purely to accommodate a mechanical change in the length of the credits, rather than the properly composed one? I most certainly not. :-) I do prefer the music as written by the composer, not as patched and pasted by someone to accomodate the movie.
