With all the coverage many film music fans have given to Ennio. It seems most of it has been stressed on his spaghetti westerns[60's early 70's] and his mid to later 80's and up scores. But I always found his early 80 scores from films that basically came and went were some of my favorites of this prolific film composer. For instance- THE ISLAND-80-Subtle layback beautiful theme and score.-BUTTERFLY-81- Gorgeous haunting score.TREASURE OF THE FOUR CROWNS-83-Beautiful theme played in slow fashion during trapeze scene and in wonderful energetic style during end credits.NANA-83- Beautiful stylish score of sad romance.SAHARA-83- Lovely romantic score that touches the heartstrings. Any comments.

Yes, especially the Golan-Globus (Cannon films) seem to be underrated.
It is unnoticed that a new style emerged in that period.
Among them, Sahara appears to me very rich, varied, with a marvelous love theme, with many variations.
After the nice Intrada CD from 1992, a proper complete release i sstill to make.
But we could say the same about Nana.

I agree. Some of my favorite work came out of this period. I would also include the late 70's scores like Days Of Heaven, Orca and Exorcist 2. I suppose it's when he started working on American productions.

...and this 1978 score - where the gorgeous, so familiar "Cinema Paradiso" melody was born (from 1:48):

The Scarlet And The Black - 1982/83:

This score really deserves an expanded and remastered CD release.

Samuel Fuller's THIEVES AFTER DARK - 1984

and IL LADRONE - 1980

are my picks for early 80s underrated Morricone.

Samuel Fuller's THIEVES AFTER DARK - 1984

Too bad this score's releases are OOP and are being sold at insanely high prices on the secondary market

As far as early 80's tracks go, The Island's gorgeous and placid main theme is one of my favorite Morricone compositions.

I agree with Thieves After Dark as well. Beautiful but melancholy.
