The juxtaposition of "La Marseillaise" and "Die Wacht am Rhein" in "Casablanca" has fascinated me for years. I always thought Steiner was an incredible genius for coming up with that. He was a genius, but it turns out that it appears two years earlier than in "Casablanca," showing up in Renoir's "Le Grande Illusion," in exactly the same way Steiner uses it. However, though the composer for "Le Grande Illusion" is listed as Joseph Kosma, it turns out Émile Vuillermoz served as musical director (uncredited). It is conceivable that either of them could be responsible. Does anyone know?
