I've not seeing this anywhere... so here it is...

I've just learned Baños did the music for this Mexican film recently, and (as a mexican) a worried was lifted from me about this project. I'm sure Baños will deliver.

and here is the first trailer...

Holy mackerel that looks great!

I don't know how many know who Cantinflas was, or how important he was to Mexico (and frankly the world) but this seems like it might do him justice.

As for Roque Baños, congrats on another step towards you becoming an international success, a la Desplat.

Well, I guess many should know the name at least from this little, fairly successful movie...

Henry, is it true that Chaplin once called Cantinflas the greatest comedian in the world? Do you happen to know?

I love Cantinflas, and am one of the few, I'm sorry to say, who even loves George Sidney's Pepe.

As to Roque Banos - I'm sure if I looked around I probably have some unopened CDs by him, but I happened to watch a very well directed and yet very bad movie called The Oxford Murders yesterday, and Banos did the score and it was superb - I'm sure the film was temped with nothing but Herrmann, but while keeping that flavor, certainly, he made it his own. Tracked down and purchased the CD immediately.

That's true (Oxford Murders is excellent and many others are)... sadly his Spanish scores are pretty much incomparable with his recent "Hollywood" output. Hopefully he'll deliver something as good as he used to when he was still in Spain.

You should also check:

13 Rosas
800 Balas
Alatriste
Balada Triste de Trompeta
La Caja Kovak
La Comunidad
Fragiles
No Somos Nadie
Obra Maestra
Segunda Piel
La Voz de su Amo

Thanks for the suggestions. It usually happens when these talented folks get recruited to Hollywood because someone hears their stuff and wants what they do - until they get here, when they are forced to imitate temp tracks and other people's music - so the very reason they were hired, they are not allowed to do. It's a little sick, and I'm glad they haven't gotten to Rombi yet.

I have never heard a bad note from Banos. The man is brilliant.

I liked this one too, Bruce...or, at least, I did back then....went twice that week.

Love to see how it stands up today, and see (amongst other things) that terrific dance routine that Michael Callan and Matt Mattox did, and that thing with the typewriter that Debbie Reynolds & Cantinflas did ?.

Where’s the DVD/Blu-Ray ?...... and is there a chance of an expanded score release ???

http://www.encyclopedia.com/topic/Cantinflas.aspx

"Often considered a Mexican counterpart to silent-film comedian Charlie Chaplin—an impression reinforced when Chaplin, according to the Houston Chronicle, called him "the greatest co-median alive"— "

I have the shortened version on an anamorphic DVD - beautiful transfer - a friend from overseas gave it to me. I'm trying mightily to get Twilight Time to do it and I'm hoping they will. Maybe I could even do a commentary and I certainly have a rather large amount of fun memorabilia for the film.

The CD of The Oxford Murders arrived today and it's every bit as good outside of the film as it was in the film. Must get some others by Mr. Banos now, although I'd like to avoid some in that trailer, the ones that sound like they insisted he follow a temp track.

Count me in, I like Pepe too.

I watched over an hour of it on Antenna TV just last night but then had to go out etc.

It's a great time capsule of Hollywood in 1960. If you lived in 1960, I was 14, then this is a nice trip back in time. The songs, the huge cars, the golden age actors & actresses etc., all is a lot of fun for me anyway. It's a quiet laid back film, I can see why many don't like it.

I have the LP, will have to play it. smile

Cantinflas was released on CD too!
The same content as previous itunes release... but on the other hand - after briefly skipping through the movie it didn't seem there was very much original score to begin with...

This is a good score -- very oldfashioned, Max Steiner-style (which I guess is the purpose). This year's THE ARTIST, in a way.

Except that Artist was mostly original work, except for the Vertigo temp love...
Cantinflas seems to be mostly period pieces with a few bits of the score in between or perhaps majority of the score went unused? Maybe I should have checked the movie more carefully, but all I could find were mostly songs and pieced from the period...

If there ever is a score only release of any sort, I'd love to hear it - just like everything from Banos...
only about 5 minutes of the score was released:
