U.S. distributors Kino Lorber have confirmed that they will release on Blu-ray director Ronald Neame's sci-fi drama Meteor (1979), starring Sean Connery, Henry Fonda, Natalie Wood, Brian Keith, Karl Malden, Martin Landau, and Richard Dysart. The release is scheduled to arrive on the U.S. market in September.
Boy, if that ain't the usual. A film from the 70's that sports some of the absolute worst special effects makes it to Blu-Ray while we are probably never going to see Blu-Ray release of some thing like, say, John Sturges THE SATAN BUG or a Sci-FI classic (imperfect though it be) like THIS ISLAND EARTH.
I suppose "never say never." Twilight Time is still out there laboring in the vineyards of the unremarked deserving.
This film was made during the waning days of the disaster craze of the 70's and died like others at the box office[WHERE TIME ENDED, BEYOND THE POSIDEN ADVENTURE,AIRPORT 79, CONCORDE,VIRUS ETC,, I remember seeing it at a Broadway theatre with about 10 other people in the theatre. Back then it was interesting, large theatres so hauntingly empty showing large films that bomb out at the B,O.
Upon it's release, I caught METEOR here in Milwaukee (at the now sadly gone Southtown theatre) in 70mm six track stereo. Even displayed in that impressive format it was embarassingly bad, with the shots of the missle arrays not keeping focus from one end to the other totally trashing any sense of scale.
And Brian Keith's Russian scientist--Sheesh! ("Foock thee Dodgers!")
The only admirable feature of the film was Rosenthal's score. (John Williams was right to kiss this one off.)
I saw it in the theater as well and was bored to death. I remember reading the cast were involved in a dangerous stunt when they flooded the tunnel they were in. The amount of water, mud and pressure involved was a little more than they expected.
Stiff as a post movie, but I love Martin Landau in it. It's as if he saw Richard Widmark in The Swarm and said to himself.... "I can out-rant that sonafabitch any day of the week!" And off he went.

Oh how wonderful to have a pristine release of "The Satan bug" would be, a superb film. I'll take a copy of "This island Earth" too.
The film's a stinker but the score is excellent. Just buy the CD.
The score is a nice one, "Clash of the titans" with a side order of Borsjt and a healthy scoop of "Laser beam sound".
The film was a let down. From the tidal wave to the meteor impact it was an embarrassment. The only true creepy thing was the mud slide. That escalator section with the tile wall was already "Beneath the planet of the apes" creepy without the mud but once that came through.... it still makes me feel uneasy.

Thanks for advising ... I'll pick this one up for nostalgia's sake.
I thought it was pretty darned cool when I saw it in the cinema, so maybe I was the target audience ... any others out there who were in the eleven-year-old-boy bracket at the time? 23 May 1980, last Friday of the school holidays - full house at the Odeon for the 11:15 am session - it just doesn't get any better!
